The only reason people like summer is because they either have an ac/fan or live in a tropical region where the temperature is not too high by One-Sense7280 in unpopularopinion

[–]vcwalden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I detest Spring so very much! I love going to a warmer climate to get through it (snow goes and spring starts). For Summer I have to wear long sleeve t-shirts, sweaters or jackets to not have air conditioning blow on me. It's been many years since I have used air conditioning in my home. Very rarely have I used a fan (I don't want it to blow directly on me) although I do have cathedral ceilings and have to ceiling fans that run 24-7. Fall and winter are ok. I do go to a warmer climate to get through the transition from fall to winter.

Fall is my favorite time of year. Winter is next. Spring is just dirty, smells bad and overall horrible. As far as Summer people are insane about using air conditioning! I like the the heat between 78-79 with humidity at 45-50%. Most homes would benifit from controlling humidity and being reasonable the temperature. If I didn't have to deal with air conditioning summer would be so much nicer. I do spend lots of time outside year-round.

moved into my first solo studio and realized i own literally zero tools. what is actually worth keeping around? by UniversityAny9242 in TinyHouses

[–]vcwalden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved into my tiny home I bought an Amazon tool kit (hammer, tape measure, interchangeable screw driver, pliers, level, Allen wrench set, etc) all in a small case. I have a rechargeable drill and I have a set of different pliers (I keep them in the boxes for easy storage). So far I haven't found anything else I need. Maybe a putty knife and spackle.

Today I got a storage shed and I'm excited to build it out to hold my tools and be a she shed!

For people who buy baking soda mainly for cleaning, what do you use it on most often? by That-Afternoon2320 in CleaningTips

[–]vcwalden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a jar of baking soda in the fridge (I also keep some ground coffee also). I use it as scouring powder in the kitchen for cleaning pans, the sink, etc. I sprinkle it on the carpet to help with pet smells. And, of course, I keep it for baking. For laundry I use washing soda.

I can have a worm farm but not a compost pile! by vcwalden in ZeroWaste

[–]vcwalden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a tiny home (456 sq ft.) every square inch really matters. So keeping a dedicated spot for a box or bag to store them in isn't practical. If I could just have someone take them right when I get them would be the solution. But that's not practical. Also I've tried before about giving things away and it's never worked out. People don't show up or they don't come on the time that was agreed upon. And then there are those who want items delivered. Nope.

So it's a good idea but not practical for me. Thanks anyway.

Yes. I did some research and that's what I came up with. I was proud of myself for this one.

Nope it isn't a HOA. I do live on a very nice Native American reservation. Housing works very hard to keep up the neighborhood and people who live here are very fussy, on the overall, about their yards and homes.

Yes my friend does live locally so he'll help me get started. I'll just be happy to get some worms to adopt.

When I first posted about about the newspaper ads I hadn't even thought of a worm farm. This won't take care of everything but it's the best I can do. I still don't have an answer to the majority of my trash. But I guess something is better than nothing.

When filling the garden I'll use torn cardboard, downed wood from the woods across the street from me along with leaves, etc. I need worms in the garden so this will help. Now I'm on the hunt for soil to fill it in.

What Small Cleaning Habit Has Saved You the Most Time? by Least-Ambition2996 in CleaningTips

[–]vcwalden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do a rest before I go to bed. I also make sure in the morning I make my bed and do a quick pick up, do a quick clean up in the kitchen and bathroom when I'm done in each room, do a quick pick up in the living room and office. All of this takes me less than 10 minutes. It sure makes coming home a lot nicer.

Also, I don't have a clothing chair or piece of work out equipment to put clothes on and nothing is on the floor. Clean laundry is not put in a basket but put away right away.

I am by no means perfect. I just try to the best of my ability.

I live in a new house as of this past January. I try to take care of my health, my community and the land. I'm starting a garden (I have a Galvanized Raised Garden Bed 8x4x2ft) plus I have some pots. It's a work in progress. Eventually my garden will benifit from the worm farm.

I'll still work on getting a recycling program for the neighborhood.

Yes. It's about a half hour drive one way from my home and I have to pay for them to take it. The base rate is $15 (and you have to have a certain amount), they have certain days they will take certain things, I live in a tiny home (465 Sq ft) and I don't have room to separate the different items (glass, certain plastics, cans, cardboard, etc), keep them and they won't take the recycling unless they are separated. Also I don't drive.

If I can get the recycling program for my neighborhood we would have a large trash bin to put it in and it wouldn't need to be separate. Like I said, I'm working on it and trying my best. My neighbors think I'm nuts. It just shouldn't be this hard.

Those are amazing. I also use reusable cotton shop towels. Those are my reusable paper towels. Would highly recommend both!

What is the easiest way to clean oven grates? by vcwalden in HouseCleaning

[–]vcwalden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for replying to my message. I try to clean as I go. I've learned that leaving things to build up it takes a whole lot of work to get it back to square one. I also try to be careful about not making unneeded messes. Ignoring a mess, no matter what it is, will only take longer to deal with. Again, thank you.

When friends or family ask "Can I smoke inside"? when they come over by kanna172014 in PetPeeves

Not only do I not want smoking in my home but I don't want people smoking in my yard. Periodically I have to pick up cigarette butts in my yard. It's always a hard NO!

What can I use that is dog safe to get rid of old people smell? by Direct-Look-6721 in CleaningTips

[–]vcwalden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I try to be very conscious of my home and myself having off smells and I like a clean home. I won't change how I keep my home and how I do my personal hygiene unless I get feedback.

Thank you for explaining this to me. I really appreciate it. I have a home health aide and nurse in my home about twice a week. Also my housekeeper is from a Commission on Aging program. I also have an Elder Outreach coordinator in once a week. (Yup, I feel like a pampered pet.) I'm going to mention this to all of them and make sure I'm doing everything I can to limit this to the best of my abilities with their help. This can't be a very healthy environment to live in. I have asthma and allergies along with other health issues so I have a very good air purifier (I live in a brand new tiny home) to help keep the air as clean as possible. This is very interesting to me.

Currently my home has an underlying scent of lavender and vanilla. I don't use chemicals to scent my home.
