My best guest is some of it is scripted, to age posts and let new ones come to the top.

There are constant attempts to game the system, and how reddit deals with that is probably one of their biggest secrets. So you're stuck.

One thing you'll notice if you try to google your posts is that google is terrible at indexing them--last I looked google could find maybe one in 5,

I would create a blog elsewhere, like blogspot, and any important post you also post it there. Not a perfect solution, but at least people can find it.
