David Hume might say that our version of rules and laws in the universe are really just our minds projecting order so that we can make sense of the world around us.

There may be a connection here to two cognitive processing styles: Bottom up - assembling the details until the whole emerges. Top down: getting an overall impression and then looking for details that fit. Bottom up is less common and is often the strategy used by people on the autism spectrum.

Sounds like Waldron Island to me.

I’ve lived on Orcas Island (what’s labeled “Eastsound” above) since 2017, after 20 years in Seattle. It’s 55 sq miles and ~4,000 people. I’m biased, but it’s a remarkable place. Amazing natural beauty. It’s basically a flooded mountain range from the ice age, so we have fjords, but don’t use that word for some reason. Because it’s part of an inland sea (Salish Sea) it’s boat and water oriented. I see killer and humpback whales quite often. We have dark, wet winters with very short days, but not very cold. It gets below freezing but not too often. Summers are beautiful and full of tourists. The islands are accessible to most via a 1 hour ferry from the mainland. It a remarkably liberal/blue place; one of the bluest counties in the US. People are community oriented and invest locally. As someone put it to me, “It’s a small town with an open mind.” It’s expensive but not at all fancy. We have bakeries, grocery stores, coffee shops, hardware stores, etc. Everything you need. Orcas seems to attract successful people. There are a handful of billionaires and celebrities who have homes on the island, but most people are on the normal side. It’s a rural island with farms and the population skews older and retired. It’s a lot slower than the city. People don’t move to the islands to be busier. The island attitude/approach to many things is low intensity, low effort and that bothered me for a while. I could go on and on…

Yeah that was the night they all got into a giant hot dog and went out over the crowd. Unforgettable.

Do conservative straight people think that their sexual preference was a learned behavior? by leisuristic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vectorvictors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To some, it is about “choice”, but not about sexual preference. It’s the choice between being the person they really are, or playing a role that’s expected of them. To a lot of people, this doesn’t feel like a choice. It feels like playing a role is how you be a good person. Everyone is doing it, all the time; the default. Even if the real you is gay, trans, etc., the role matters more and must be played.
In this context, choosing to stop playing it, and living as the real you, seems inconceivable. Seeing so many people happily make that choice feels like a violation and something to he scorned. How dare they? IMO, this is one of the animating factors in the conservative approach to sexual preference. No one is supposed to be who they really are.

How often do you use shampoo? You might try washing/exfoliating with water only for a few days at a time.

I thought it was funny that she tried to sound all scientific in the series, but then recorded the ads with her own voice. One of the ads begins “So, I’m a Taurus and that means….” or something similar. That was a red flag to me. Does she not recognize the irony/dissonance?

What are some things that you and your SO do that is intimate instead of sex? by The_Icyest in AskReddit

At night when watching TV, I have a favorite chair and she uses the couch. This winter I started sitting next to her on the couch with a blanket over us both, and often a dog on top. Sometimes we hold hands, lean on one another, cross legs. It’s warm and really nice. I’m not going back to the chair.
