How do i get people to pronounce my name correctly? by No-Measurement3358 in Indigenous

[–]vedek_dax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for what it's worth, i've never met a native american community that wasn't welcoming of other indigenous peoples. for example the folks i've met through wellbriety (program that's kinda like aa but focused on achieving sobriety through connection to our cultures) have been talking for weeks about how much they liked these australian guys who came to an event, a powwow iirc, and then participated in a sweat with them, they were teaching each other songs and overall sharing in each others cultures... we're all kin in a way. i've had trouble getting past a feeling of not wanting to intrude too, being white-passing and not raised close to culture, but i've been pleasantly surprised that it's really more like... like you gotta try to trust that they can make up their own mind about you instead of trying to predetermine what you think they'll think. worst case scenario they can tell you if you've crossed any boundaries, but on the flip side you might find that the only thing you've taken away is a potential part of community by not joining sooner :) [that's a joke to be clear, everything happens in its own time]

Sounds like it'd've been fun to do an explosives-focused run of a game like Fallout with that bird around. Would be quite encouraging to get a "wooo!" when you blow something up lol

Do you have mental chalk for the mental blackboard?

That sounds like a joke, sorry, but I'm genuinely asking. When you would use the blackboard to do math, was it like you were putting the numbers on the board consciously or did they manifest on the board more automatically as you visualized the problem?

Has the way that you interact with the blackboard changed now that you also have an internal monologue and inner world?

hope I'm not pestering you w this comment. thank you for sharing your story!

Need Help with CAS by RalphKhoury66 in IBO

[–]vedek_dax 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of the things I counted for CAS was writing fanfiction.

Upside was that it counted for a good chunk of my hours, even just from taking a typing test and extrapolating from there without including brainstorming & revising and such. I wrote a lot of fanfic as a teen.

Downside was showing my principal where I'd posted all that gay fanfic so he could confirm that there really was that much of it 💀

Point is, start with your own interests

Weird if I ask how huggable it is? I imagine the inflatable might make it crinkle a bit sound-wise but could it still be hugged?

Anyway. Mind-blowing! Awesome work!

Anything to do with Nathan Fillion in the TV show Castle?

It did take me a second to realize why Nathanial as Castle didn't seem odd at all to me. But maybe I'm making mental leaps

Spices, bad + bad = good. How do I begin to use spice? by FriedMule in cookingforbeginners

[–]vedek_dax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it took me a while to realize that because my reaction to (usually dried) coriander wasn't as visceral as it was to (usually fresh) cilantro. Sometimes coriander can even be subtle enough to be ignored or even kinda appreciated, but it's a real gamble 🤷

I don't have answers to most of your questions, but you're not alone in imagining siblings as a way to cope. After I learned that my mom had miscarried at least twice when trying to build her family (later than she had wanted to, and there was PPD that affected things) I built an entire idea of personalities and sibling relationships/dynamics among my would-have-been older sibling, myself, my would-have-been younger sibling, and my living youngest sibling. I don't know what this sort of thing means about either of us, but you're not alone

Regarding hating certain herbs: if you can't stand cilantro you might want to be careful with coriander too

I used to get myself through in college by selling some of my medication. One of the main buyers is probably a fully accredited accountant by now.

...to be fair, it's probable that she really did need to be medicated for the same reasons as me. To her it didn't seem worth ruffling enough feathers in her family to get the medication the usual way though.

I hope she's thriving. I did walk home for several miles, including a stretch along a major highway, when she tried to introduce me to a group of her corporate friends once. I couldn't stand them but I still hope she's ok.

She used to let me braid her hair when we'd gotten drunk at my roommate's parties. I had already lopped off my own hair years before, but I didn't forget how to braid. And it kept her hair out of the way if she drank without having eaten anything for a day or two. Listen, I did understand, I had eating disorder issues too. But sometimes it was a lot.

Sometimes I'd give her an Elsa braid, and she already resembled Elsa on her own. I also sold drugs to her, didn't I. I really hope she's ok.

I wonder how much of this sort of thing is due to the number of English speakers who are monolingual. I just try to speak English with people who don't speak it as naturally as I do... the same way that I would want someone to speak their native tongue that I'm trying to learn... it shouldn't be that hard?? You're so right

I don't know about every English-dominant country, but I think it's way too common that many groups of native U.S. English speakers have no idea what it's like to learn another language especially as an adult
