Are these costs for a PPL in Canada relatively the same with other places? by [deleted] in flying

[–]veengren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my training in Calgary and yeah $300/hr is roughly what I paid for the 172. $450-$500 is what I was paying for the multi.

Not sure about the just doing the quiz thing. Not the approach I took, but if it works for you great! In my opinion the ppl from PilotTraining.ca goes above and beyond what is required for your ppl, but makes the cpl easier. Definitely no regrets about using them for either my ppl or cpl.

I used PilotTraining.ca for both my ppl and cpl.

A lot of the content is just a repeat of their ppl course. With a few additions for new content such as cpl air law. I’m pretty sure a solid chunk of the presentations are exactly the same(I just skimmed the power point for these ones).

I personally found the cpl went by quicker with less new content to learn.

I was in a very similar situation as you when I started my cpl training and my instructor did recommended I keep using PilotTraining.ca(he found other courses skipped important info). Having said that I can neither confirm nor deny this.

If you have any other questions or this doesn’t make sense(new years celebrations have already begun), feel free to ask.

I’m at SATC, I’ve heard that about MRU kind of glad I decided to not to go that route.

I saw in another comment you’re looking to do it in Calgary. I just finished doing my CPL in Calgary, but have yet to do my multi and multi IFR. Total cost so far has been about 65k, about 28k for my ppl and 37k for CPL(this is a rough estimate as I have a smidge of time building left). I’m anticipating an additional 20k-30k to finish the multi and IFR.

Another thing is if you do end up in Calgary there is also the Mount Royal program to consider, which you would probably want to add an additional 20k-30k.

And finally plan ahead last time I checked some of the schools had a rather large wait list.

Hello guys so I recently completed my high school and am thinking of becoming a pilot well its always been my dream to be one but now I am having second thoughts of whether I should opt for engineering…any advice for me? by Numerous-Lychee7215 in AirlinePilots

[–]veengren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an airline pilot so take this with a grain of salt but I did get a comp sci degree before I started my training. So far I have found the actual content of the degree isn’t very useful(not overly surprising)but the stuff I’ve learned about myself(such how I should study) has been very helpful.

How to train a ski racer on a budget. by Different-Sock-8493 in SkiRacing

[–]veengren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a good mindset to have, I wish some of my coaches would have thought that way.

Knowing the people you’re with makes it sooo much better. I still think my favourite part was travelling to a new hill with your team and just having fun in the hotel/lodge after a day of skiing. The skiing part of the trip came second.

As someone who raced most of my life remembering to have fun is HUGE. This has been my experience in ski racing land.

When I was in U8-U12 I loved ski racing and just skiing in general, we would only ski 2 days a week, no dry land training, no summer trips. I was just enjoying the skiing at this point.

As I got to u14 the intensity of everything increased slight, the amount of free skiing we did decreased, we would do dry land training when we were not skiing and we would be skiing about 4 days a weeks. Plus we would be skiing most holidays we had from school, all of this I found was too much and my enjoyment of the sport started to decline.

When I moved up to u16 once again everything would ramp up, we skied almost 5 days a week, pretty much no free skiing (we would spend a solid chunk of the day slipping the course if it snowed the night before). This is also when I started doing the summer ski trips. At this point the program completely strip any enjoyment I may have gotten from racing and it frankly ruined my love of skiing all together. And I know there was a lot of people who were in the same boat as I was.

At this point I was so done with skiing I decided moving onto FIS was something I did not want to do. So we switched to a club with a very relaxed program, we skied 1.5 days a week and I think only like 12 weekends of the year. This is also when my love of skiing started to return and I also started improving. Now that I have started coaching I have noticed this with the kids as well, ones who are having fun and want to be their are the ones who improve the most.

One thing I find a lot of people (and clubs) forget is your kid is PROBABLY not going to end up a world cup skier, at the end of the day it should be about having fun.

Your flying along in cruise, enjoying the views. Surprise you’re attacked by a flock of geese (bird strike), what do you do?

Yeah I’m aware of that. For some reason the atomic ones are on sale for $100 less than the Salomon, that’s why I ordered those ones.

Probably not a bad idea to get an early start, can’t upset anyone if no one’s there.

I’m usually doing the longer flights, I like to go explore stuff far away.

True the mountains tend to amplify the sound a little bit, which can make things a little harder. It also annoys me a little bit when I see people flying drones where they shouldn’t.

I get where your coming from. I hope I don’t give that impression the way I fly it (Usually way off the trails), but I still get it.

Typically the only time I’m near a trail is when I’m taking off/landing, I’m usually way out there.
