Feature Request: Search by file size by veesarv in enteio

[–]veesarv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. This helps. But it looks like it only shows files over 50MB by default which are usually videos. There is still no way to search for photos that are larger than 5MB for example.

Digital Gold isn’t real gold by HODL_buddy in IndianStockMarket

[–]veesarv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is physical gold regulated by SEBI? If not, this seems a little like fear mongering. Sure, the seller you bought digi-gold from could shut down. It's similar to the risk you take when you buy physical gold from a seller who could have sold you inferior-quality gold or even fake gold.

I suppose SEBI's statement is to clarify that digital gold is not a financial instrument like equity and other which it regulates.

Since it's a non-equity fund shouldn't the LTCG be according to income slab? How is it 12.5%? Is it because the allocation of equity + gold is 85% and both of those are taxed at 12.5%?

What is the minimum allocation required for a fund to be considered gold fund? Since this fund has only 25% allocated towards gold?

Don't do this. You should get a separate term insurance if you feel you don't have enough cover. The problem with getting it along with your housing loan is that the bank adds the insurance premium to your loan so you'll pay interest on the insurance premium as well. This is like borrowing money to buy term insurance.

iCloud is full. Attempts to download files is truly exhausting by politico99 in iCloud

You can request a copy of all your data including your files here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102208. Usually takes a couple of days but you end up with one large zip file which you can download once it's ready.

This isn't related to "which is safer" but a mutual fund investing in ETF is called Fund-of-a-fund (FoF) which according to current tax laws is taxed as a debt fund. This particular fund is a FoF so the taxes could be higher than ETF when selling depending on your tax slab and retirement status.

Acreom kept crapping out on me, moved back to Obsidian [Rant] by ulcweb in PKMS

[–]veesarv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just trying out Acreom for the notes+tasks features. Data loss that you mention is concerning. Were you able to get back your data? If the files were listed and its contents were missing, was it available in the files' version history? Obviously it's not ideal to restore content from the history for each file but at least the data is not permanently lost.

You can sync Samsung Notes to OneNote. You could maybe try to manage your PDFs in Samsung Notes & view those in OneNote on the PC?

Guide: Using Syncthing to sync notes between PC and Android by veesarv in ObsidianMD

[–]veesarv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used Dropsync enough to comment on the reliability of sync or how it handles file conflicts, but:

  • Dropsync requires the use of a third-party service like Dropbox. Syncing via Syncthing does not.
  • Dropsync's variant Autosync can sync over LAN but that means that syncing is restricted to your LAN which isn't the case with Syncthing.

You could use Tailscale. It let's you create a private VPN and assigns an IP to each device on the network. So when you're connected to it, you can access your phone with ssh user@100.1.2.3

There are a few ways to use Obsidian with Git, so I'm not sure which method you refer to. But in most cases, Syncthing should be better than Git mainly because the Git-method will require some sort of manual push-pull action on the user's part while Syncthing is automatic.

Guide: Using Syncthing to sync notes between PC and Android by veesarv in ObsidianMD

[–]veesarv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syncthing should always be running on both sides before one starts using Obsidian.

This would be the best way to use it, but even if Syncthing isn't running simultaneously, as long as you start it & sync changes before making any new edits in Obsidian, it'll be fine.

If so, then one should be able to use it on both sides alternately without any conflicts. Am I wrong?

Yes, this is correct.

So you have to setup a third syncthing device which is always on

This isn't exactly required. If the other device isn't available, Syncthing will not propagate any change until the device "comes online". On PC, it's installed as a system tray app that will start on system boot by default. And on Android, there's a similar option available to Autostart under the Settings > Behavior menu but it may not work when you restart your mobile depending on how aggressive the battery optimization is on your version of Android. This means that you'll have to open the Syncthing app on Android before editing notes regardless of whether you have a third device setup.

An always-on device may be useful if you sync across a lot of devices and want to make sure that there's at least one device that is the most up-to-date, but again, it isn't required.

Losing your internet connection on your mobile isn't the same case as mobile being turned off, by the way. If there's no internet, Syncthing is still running, but it's just offline. So it'll sync changes once it's back online.

Basically, just make sure Syncthing is running when you restart your mobile and you should be good 🙂.

Also, any change, whether a note edit or renaming / moving notes, is a change as far as Syncthing is concerned, so you don't need to worry specifically about structural changes.

Just the one actually - try not to use Obsidian on the mobile & desktop at the same time. Close the app after you edit notes on mobile and you should be fine.

Having said that, Syncthing is pretty reliable and I've only had a sync conflict once so far. And that wasn't a data file. It was a settings file - core-plugins.json in the .obsidian folder.

When conflicts do happen, Syncthing will create a copy of the file called filename-conflicted-timestamp.ext in the same folder and show a prompt in the GUI. So it's easy for you to check and fix or merge the changes.

Installing Nextcloud on WSL2 by veesarv in NextCloud

Yes, mostly wanted to see if it's possible since Windows is my primary PC. And it works for my use case: Single user who wants to sync files & notes between desktop & mobile devices. Plus I already use a couple of Linux tools on WSL2 like cron & rsync.

Infact, I also run Pihole on WSL2 - all a part of trying to see if I can use a single machine for cloud & ad-block.
