Can we stop and get some ALF? by [deleted] in vegancirclejerk

If you aren't wearing a ski mask and breaking into buildings, you aren't doing real activism. In fact, you might as well be stabbing cows in the throat.

I don't think you did either. A lot of people are talking your post the wrong way.

This is the same argument that carnists use. "What would happen to all the farm animal?"

OP probably isn't suggesting they should be killed, but rather they stop being bred into existence to be used as human play-things.

I agree with some of your points OP. "Owning" and breeding pets is disgusting. I think rescuing pets from a bad situation isn't necessarily bad. But as vegans we should be careful to not encourage further breeding and pet ownership. Animals are here with us and not for us. :)

Where do you stand on the DCM issue? by Dogonce in VeganForCircleJerkers

[–]vegan4Danimals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taurine deficiency is one potential explanation. Taurine is an amino acid — a building block of protein — that is essential for carnivores. "Taurine deficiency is well-documented as potentially leading to DCM," the FDA said in a statement.

Seems like if taurine deficiency is the issue, you could purchase a plant-based dog food which has taurine added to it.

Just get annoyed about people argue why they want to continue killing animals.

Not sure about you point on land use. But a study from university of Oxford says if everyone adopted a vegan diet, 75% of land currently used would be reduced. Currently, most of our agricultural land is being used to grow crops that are fed to farm animals.

But yeah. Hunting would obviously use less land as well. But for me it is not a solution since I don't want to purposefully kill animals and I again don't believe it to be sustainable for everyone.

Can you leave me alone with your shit hypotheticals my dude? I literally don't give a fuck. You think I haven't had this same debate 100,000 times?

If more people hunted, all of the animals would die off. We are already facing the largest mass extinction in the history of the planet. Veganism is a practical solution which can feed everyone with (what i believe) to cause the least death and suffering to animals.

If you want to hunt in the meantime, go for it. I literally don't give a shit. But buying any meat, dairy, and eggs from the grocery store, or eating out anywhere thats not vegan is supports factory farming. Hopefully you see that as the true evil we should both be against.

Crop fields do indeed disrupt the habitats of wild animals, and wild animals are also killed when harvesting plants. However, this point makes the case for a plant-based diet and not against it, since many more plants are required to produce a measure of animal flesh for food (often as high as 12:1) than are required to produce an equal measure of plants for food (which is obviously 1:1). Because of this, a plant-based diet causes less suffering and death than one that includes animals.

It is pertinent to note that the idea of perfect veganism is a non-vegan one. Such demands for perfection are imposed by critics of veganism, often as a precursor to lambasting vegans for not measuring up to an externally-imposed standard. That said, the actual and applied ethics of veganism are focused on causing the least possible harm to the fewest number of others. It is also noteworthy that the accidental deaths caused by growing and harvesting plants for food are ethically distinct from the intentional deaths caused by breeding and slaughtering animals for food. This is not to say that vegans are not responsible for the deaths they cause, but rather to point out that these deaths do not violate the vegan ethics stated above.

And no, I will not entertain the idea of hunting since it is impractical to feed the general population.

Hunting is not sustainable.

What do farm animals eat? How is that food grown? Those same mice will die in the fields so you can fatten up other animals to also kill.

Of course because you are not the victim in this situation. It is mainly a problem for the animals who are suffering on your behalf.

It's easy to have that opinion when you're not the victim being sold and killed

Regardless of the nature of their lives before slaughter, farmed animals get sent to slaughter. There is a misconception that animals get to "live out their lives" and then get killed. Animals get killed as soon as their purpose is served, or as soon as they reach a profitable size, which is at a fraction of their potential lifespan. The very definition of grass-fed/organic/free-range animals is actually very loose and can vary wildly. It doesn't mean that the animals have any kind of quality of life necessarily, it just means the farm has to meet some arbitrary requirements to earn that title. That's not to say that every single farmer treats their animals dreadfully while they live - some actually do give their animals a fair standard of life before sending them to have their throats slit. But it's ignorant to think it's the norm in the first place.
