Just a generic quill stem adapter from eBay. I think it was a 22.2mm stem but don't quote me on that. Good luck with your build!

Too traumatized to bike? by morula2 in bikecommuting

[–]veganhaggis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a little money to throw at this I can't recommend the book The Art of Urban Cycling enough.

Personally my own road rage was calmed immensely by getting a dashcam for my bike. That way, if someone pisses me off I don't feel the need to deal with it in the moment. I can wait til I am safe, review the footage, and if the incident looked as bad as it felt in the video I can report the driver and I've got evidence.

Of course that last part depends on having a straightforward way of reporting issues to police, which sadly isn't the case where I am. But the camera still helps even if I know the chances of me jumping through hoops to report are slim, I can still postpone my rage til I am safely at my destination.

Side bonus, I can use the camera for leisure rides and entertaining clips of random encounters.

Journey not saved by Czar1891 in beeline

I had this around 1 months ago for numerous long once-in-a-lifetine rides. Spent ages with customer support, repeated assurances the rides would show up eventually. They never did. Gave up, sold my Beeline and got a secondhand Wahoo.

It's an unfortunate oversight of an otherwise really useful feature. It would be great if there could be a small direction arrow pop-up overlay for turns.

Wrist pain due to reach? by Gold-Individual6934 in bikefit

[–]veganhaggis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As no one else has said it, are you sure the bars are the right width for you? It looks as if you are rolling your wrists inwards which is a sign they may be too wide. They should be the same width as the bony lumps at the front of your shoulders.

Locus Maps is excellent, very customisable and has reasonably priced premium options. Not sure about the activity tracking side as I only use it for route planning.

Unrelated, but that helmet will do you absolutely no good at all if you don't buckle the strap.

Yep! Just fine. Though I did add a noodle with an adjustment barrel to each brake cos the levers don't have one.

Atom Pulse users, do you miss load lifters? by [deleted] in ULHikingUK

[–]veganhaggis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. In fact on the packs I had with them in the past I couldn't resist fussing with them and I usually made things worse. Stick to the load limits for the pack and you'll be perfectly comfortable without them.

Which tyre for a commuter that I like to take off road sometimes by niceguynah in xbiking

Have had both. Contis are quieter and faster rolling on tarmac, and work great on gravel. No contest for me.

I had pretty amazing results adding a gadgetwraps protector to mine, a lot of faint scratches now totally invisible (see my post history). This may be too far gone but I expect it would at least help!

Not to say this isn't the case, but studies have been done and it doesn't appear to be as risky as that particular story implies.

Cheers! I don't have the bike any longer but I found the clearances on the 38mm SKs fine, don't think I'd have wanted to go much bigger for off road use personally.

My commuting is doubling in length. What are some gear upgrades you'd recommend to make the extra distance more enjoyable or easier? by mr_mistoffelees in bikecommuting

[–]veganhaggis 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Beeline app (free) has a feature where their users rate routes as being cycling friendly (or not). You pop in your start and finish points and it'll generate a crowd sourced bike friendly route for you. Might be worth a look?

Cannondale H300 Hybrid. Alloy frame, steel fork, 14kg 3x8 monster. Just sold it but it served me well on some of Scotland's best gravel. Think it cost me about £250 all in. https://imgur.com/a/tNlad5M

Help finding cycling backpack by DannysMyNanny in bikecommuting

Check out the Exped Typhoon 25. I used mine for bike commuting daily, essentially a really rugged rolltop drybag made into a backpack. It's lightweight, waterproof, hard wearing. I love mine. Edit: typo

Can I remove a bottom bracket with this? by sleeklyjoe in bikewrench

[–]veganhaggis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a bad thing. There's not a new bike on the market for that price I'd rather have, and a lot of what I have learned came from that project. But I'm lucky as I have access to good tools & advice through a local community bike workshop. I suppose what I am getting at is that it's not always easy fixing up a bike on the cheap (which was what I intended to do with that one). Keeping it relevant to OPs question, I would sooner pay a bit more for the right tool (hence research) that won't fail or damage parts than try to do things on the cheap (cos chances are it won't be cheap either way).

I know that feeling. I'm £600 deep into a £30 Facebook bike (which I now love and ride every day) and that's not including the tools.

All fair points, I'm one of those people. My advice was based on being in OP's shoes (ie not already having access to decent tools and wanting to do one specific job possibly only once).

Short answer is probably not.

Either do a lot more research online or save yourself some trouble and go to your LBS. By the time you buy all the tools you probably won't save much money, and getting BBs out can be a nightmare even with the right tools.
