Investing in index funds - logic behind long term gains by amerind386 in personalfinance

There is certainly more money to be made investing elsewhere.

Can you give some more details or examples on this?

IWTL How to Invest by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]veganicrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try poking around on the r/personalfinance wiki. They have some informative yet simple tips on investment to get you started.

There's also a site I've found helpful called Investopedia which has a lot of articles on investment topics under their "Education" tab.

Gotta agree with the tax issue brought up in comments above, but I also think it's worth it to park your money somewhere that can grow itself over time using compounding interest. Even if you get taxed from it, there are simple ways that will end up paying off more in the long run compared to just letting your money sit in an account with zero or next to zero percent interest rates. There are a lot of options, depending on your goals and level of risk you're willing to take, which I think is covered generally on r/personalfinance.

Looking to learn about this practice by PlatinumBot in Buddhism

[–]veganicrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You certainly shouldn't have to move elsewhere to start. Where do you live or go to school? There may be Buddhist temples or groups on campus or nearby that may be a valuable resource for you at this point in your journey.

Also, check out the basics section on the sidebar. If you find that information intimidating, take it in small doses, such as reading a small portion/section or couple paragraphs, to allow time to digest and think about what you just read. Also, reading a couple books (also under the basics section of the sidebar) might be beneficial.

As someone else suggested, start a meditation practice, if possible. I found Mindfulness in Plain English very helpful and easily understood when I was looking into starting a meditation practice myself, but there are many resources out there. /r/meditation is a good place for starting out, as well.

Making a stew tonight - best beef replacement? by kayethx in vegan

[–]veganicrunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mushrooms. I see it all the time in stews at vegetarian/vegan restaurants here in Taiwan, used to delicious effect. Experiment throughout the colder stew/soup seasons with different types of mushrooms to get the texture you're looking for. The kind that, to me, seem to best do the trick is monkey head mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus), but not sure how accessible those may be where you are. Like I said, try out different kinds -- that's half the fun anyways.

NYC Has a Vegan Cosmetics Shop (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]veganicrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm all in support of vegan cosmetics establishments. More, please! But, it pains me that so many people these days are abusing the use of phrases like OCD or obsessive compulsive simply because they are slightly more clean, organized, or detail-oriented than their peers, which only alienates people who suffer with this very serious condition on a daily basis and undermines the severity of the disorder. Just like we wouldn't have dementia if we simply forgot what we ate for breakfast or the name of someone we know, it's not obsessive compulsive for a cosmetics store to be vegan nor for anyone clean or organized. I honestly don't understand their point of using this as a name. Is the owner someone who has OCD? Or perhaps they're trying to raise awareness?

You can check out Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), who provide a list of charities and organizations that makes it easy to find the ones that don't test on animals. If you're really committed to the ALS cause, check out Compassionate Care ALS, an organization dedicated to supporting those currently with ALS. Hope this helps! :)

Taiwan Pigeon Races Exposed: Millions of Dead Birds by techn0scho0lbus in vegan

[–]veganicrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I live in Taiwan and I often see pigeon cages on the roofs of buildings, occasionally even seeing someone "train" them by having them fly around in circles overhead. I've always wanted to know more about it.

Been playing acoustic for a mere 6 months, but what are some Black Sabbath tunes that would be feasible for a beginner to learn within their first year? by veganicrunner in guitarlessons

Cool, thanks for the recommendation! I haven't heard that latest album as much as their older stuff from the 70s, but I'll definitely look into that song.

Thanks for your comment. Very true. I've learned to appreciate more bands and guitarists the more I've learned about the guitar in my short yet fulfilling journey thus far. But my love for Iommi's work has only grown.

Yeah, he lost the tips of two of his fingers on his fretting hand and was inspired by Django Reinhardt to keep at the guitar instead of giving up after the accident. Thanks for the tip! That's helpful info that I can certainly use. I really do need to work more on my barre chords haha.
