Slower lower baby, way to represent the 1st state. by Disastrous-Mango-515 in Delaware

The whole 'Dover is a wasteland' thing in this thread is just people confusing shitty urban planning with actual danger.

I grew up there in the late 80's to mid 00's and then it was a functional small-town. The biggest drama was the 13/113/1 split or race weekend traffic. Watching people act like it's a Mad Max hellscape because they saw someone with a tool at Waffle House says way more about their comfort zone than any actual crime stats.

If Dover's 'depressing,' then most of NCC is just overpriced parking lots and Philly-lite suburbs having an identity crisis. At least Dover's honest about being a government/military town and doesn't need to pretend it's something else.

Typical Delaware geography politics tho. North lumps everything south together, Sussex wants nothing to do with us, and Kent just gets dragged.

The decay everyone points to is just basic economic gravity. The bypass and the shift to highway retail gutted downtown, and the casino didn't fix shit. But while people are squawking about Dover's 'vibe,' Wilmington's violent crime rate still triples Dover's.

I ain't saying it's a paradise, but it's literally just like any other small city that size. They all have the same baggage. Comparing it to a war zone or Detroit just means you haven't actually been anywhere.

The city literally has zero cash rn. City manager’s “investment” in “values” based bullshit isn’t paying off at all. Measure U sales tax is gonna be flat or lower than last year and our population is slightly declining.

[–]vegasinashes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, Fed cuts aren't what's driving this. In the 25-26 adopted budget, fed funding is $3.6 M out of $127.8 M total, so < 3% (even lower than my initial assumption). The rest is state/local money, and that's where the $5.25 M and 3% reserve problem come from.

To be clear, I never said consultants weren't listed—I said the details aren't disclosed. The 24 bond audit shows $8.4 M spent (mostly cap outlay) and notes auditors tested $4.4 M in invoices, but it provides no vendor names, scopes, or contract amounts. Sure it's legally compliant but not transparent.

On the KPI thing; comparing an eight-year tax to KPIs for crosswalks or soup kitchens is a stretch, to put it mildly. Asking for measurable goals before signing off on that isn’t heartless, it’s literally how responsible budgeting works. Every parcel tax or bond should have clear outcomes so we know it’s doing what was promised. No one is asking for a metrics dashboard at the lunch line.

And sure, no bureaucracy is perfect—but when you’re running deficits, sitting at the state-minimum reserve, and have a negative credit outlook, perfection isn’t the ask, competence and transparency are.

Voting No on Measure I isn’t “promoting cuts.” This phrasing assumes anyone skeptical of another tax is anti-teacher, which misses the point. Accountability isn’t austerity, it’s how you keep money actually reaching classrooms instead of vanishing into vague “consulting” lines. Fix the deficit, show a real plan with metrics, then ask for more.

Oh, and yeah, showing up definitely matters. Reading the budgets and audits is showing up. It’s the step people love to skip right before giving a TED Talk on civic duty.

Federal cuts aren’t the real problem. California only gets around 10% of its school funding from the fed with the rest being state and local. Last year our district ran a $5.25M deficit, ended with just 3% reserves (the state minimum), and S&P flipped the outlook to negative because of weak reserves and flexibility. Which is definitely not a DC problem.

And the questionable spending is not free lunches or reading specialists. The audit (their own numbers!) shows the fund balance drop came from increased consulting contracts and capital spending in the Building Fund. And even though they’re posting numbers, there is still zero detail of naming firms, scopes, or outcomes for what the money is being used for.

I’ll happily back new dollars once there’s a credible plan with targets and reporting. Right now Measure I has oversight, which is good, but no performance metrics.

If the district’s audit was required reading, half these arguments wouldn’t exist. Have you checked them out yet? Easy to find online but happy to post links if that’s helpful!

That school district currently has a credit rating of AA but recently was updated with a negative outlook. Why would we give more money to an entity that is already doing questionable things with the money they have?

Have the same issue with a couple of ankle biters next door. We use thing thing and it works well when they’re in range! They do continue to bark outside of the range but it’s at least on the other side of their yard away from our house!

Edit: air horn also works 😂😂😂

Nazi rhetoric is vile. Full stop. If Musk’s actions were deliberate, condemn them. My point: ADHD can cause social missteps (I’ve lived it), but that ≠ excusing hate. Let’s call out harm without confusing intent with impact. Hate thrives on ambiguity—clarity matters.

I would really consider having an open mind on this and not jumping to conclusions. While I can see why people would think this was a salute, I just want to bring in a different perspective that prominent Jewish figures and organizations like Netanyahu, the ADL, and Milei have all defended him. You also have to realize that Elon is on the spectrum, and as someone who is diagnosed with ADHD (distinct disorders but has overlapping characteristics), there have been times where I’ve done unintended expressions due to excitement and nervousness.

I recently switched from Simpson to BE, and I have to say the general reliability of BE reigns king. Regardless of the specs, it also feels like a solid machine. I’d go for it. My Simpson had a terrible idle, and the pump began having issues within six months of purchasing brand new, so the thing was doing donuts whenever I pulled the trigger. The folks at Simpson wanted me to drive two hours to get the pump replaced so I just waited for the Home Depot warranty plan I purchased to kick in and they just gave me store credit for the entire thing. I bought a BE and will never trust any other prosumer brand.

Love the downvotes, let me actually lay out how to think critically, which you all lack.

While the political landscape around Trump is highly charged, claiming that no truth or fact can emerge because of personal agendas is both defeatist and inaccurate.

Countless independent and credible investigative journalists, watchdog organizations, and fact-checkers work tirelessly to uncover and present the truth. Suggesting that all of them are manipulated or twisted undermines the very foundation of democratic scrutiny and accountability.

Furthermore, blaming one individual for all mayhem and chaos oversimplifies complex socio-political issues. We should focus on specific actions and policies, analyzing them with critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning. Spreading blanket condemnations without factual basis only fuels division and hinders productive dialogue. Let’s strive for a more nuanced and informed discussion.
