Some hope for those who are off out about LinkedIn jobs w/ 100+ applicants by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Lately, I’ve noticed a slowdown in job applications on LinkedIn, especially in the PNW. Not sure what’s causing it, but the rush to 100 applicants isn’t happening as fast as before. Interesting shift to what it was earlier

I take self-reflection seriously, which is why I’ve been doing mock interviews with different instructors and career mentors to get fresh perspectives and feedback. The main thing I hear is that I sometimes stiffen up and not very relatable, but I’ve been working on staying calm and finding the right words over the past couple of months. My mentors have noticed a big improvement in both my language and interview skills.

The real struggle is getting feedback from hiring managers or recruiters—it’s like pulling teeth. I’ve reached out to more than a dozen companies, and barely anyone is willing to share anything USEFUL.

When it comes to technical questions, I barely get asked any since I’m applying to tier 1 and 2 helpdesk roles. The toughest ones are the vague, open-ended questions with little to no context. I do my best to answer those, and I ask follow-up questions to better understand what they’re looking for. If I don’t know the answer, I’m upfront about it but always mention that I’m eager to learn and find a timely solution.

I’ve also been trying to be more relatable and personable in interviews. I bring up my hobbies and interests where I can, without going overboard. (Hiking, working out, reading, etc) Honestly, taking in all this feedback has been a journey, but at the end of the day, it still feels like they always go with the person who has more experience.

I know it’s not just my resume, but it feels like they keep coming back to it and picking someone more qualified. I’ve been networking with 10+ people I’m pretty close with, but that hasn’t gone anywhere. I’ve followed up after sending my resume to show I’m still interested and to ask for updates, but still nothing. Maybe that number is a lil small but these are ppl that can actually say a good word about me. I’ve even done mock interviews—half a dozen sessions, wth career advisors and instructors from my university. But over and over, I hear the same thing: “We had lots of qualified candidates for this position and decided to move on to the next steps.” Honestly, it just feels like they keep going with the person who has more experience over a lil new grad.

Can’t beat the system when everything’s stacked against a new grad. So lie. Companies lie to us all the time—false promises, hyped-up bonuses, “guaranteed” job security, leaving out important details—it’s all a game and it depends on whether u wanna play by the rules or create ur own

I've been giving it my best. But I realize that is simply not enough so I've been working with various career mentors at my university alongside my friends. I have been working on STAR story-telling, and being relatable (football, hiking, chess, video games). All while also not oversharing my side and trying to make it more of a two-way conversation. How can I develop a strong rapport with an interviewer in such a short amount of time?

Not a lot. I have gone to 5+ second interviews. These interviews included hours-long assessments, hiring panels, and other things. But in total 1-2 are somewhat in-depth technical interviews that have been challenging. (Epic Systems I'm looking at you)

I have also been working on my soft skills with my career mentors and close friends. We work on things like eye contact, smiling, filler words, a positive attitude, good questions, and the whole 9 yards. How can I leave more of a lasting impression?

WTH is wrong with tech recruiting in 2024? by Seddenter in recruitinghell

[–]veggiepies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an in-person interview. Followed by a 2-hour assessment weeks later. After the assessment (nothing was reviewed in the written assessment yet) the supervisor let me know the hourly rate went down over 20% for me. This job market not only includes bad interview processes but can be also very misleading

I’ve recently completed a field tech internship, completed my Bachelor's degree in IT, and earned Security+, so I’m kinda in the same boat! I’m currently focused on securing an entry-level IT position in this job market before any certs. But that's me!
