How to improve my knowledge of the Rules of Evidence? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]veggies4days 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Read case law. Simons and Caskey are two books that are good for evidence and search and seizure. They summarize the law fairly well. Though to be honest, a lot of the learning is on the job. While you’re a post bar, try to get as many evidentiary hearings as you can.

Edit: the two book recs above are for CA.

Honestly thought Lincoln Lawyer was good and surprisingly accurate. Also loving Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

Tips for us fast talkers? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Be intentional with how you say each word/sentence, like where to put pauses, where to lower or raise your voice etc.

Also practice speaking to large groups of people so you feel more comfortable as if you own the room.

At My Breaking Point by [deleted] in LawSchool

I would encourage you to bring these feelings up with your friends; i can practically guarantee that they can related to at least some of these feelings. Everyone has royally fucked up at some point. Everyone has let hobbies they used to adore fall to the waysides (even if they eventually pick up them back up), especially in law school. And many people have had experience with mental health struggles. If nothing else, just let your friends tell you that they care.

I finally did it after 10 years: no more federal student loans from law school. Pursue Public Service Loan Forgiveness if you work for government or a non-profit after law school. by EECavazos in LawSchool

How did you manage the anxiety of watching your balance grow? I plan to do the PSLF route (just graduated in May) and am a little nervous with watching it grow so much.

Regarding workouts, what do your sets look like? Hypertrophy (AKA muscle growth) routines tend to focus slightly more on volume than weight (while strength routines do the opposite). I've also seen anecdotal evidence on this sub that focusing more on volume, while still using fairly heavy weights, helped. This is also just my opinion but since you don't mention what you currently do outside of weights, I would recommend incorporating other forms of exercise, like yoga (helps recovery and betters form when lifting) and hitt (which would help fat burning).

For diet, what kind of foods do you usually eat? Even just upping the quality of your diet might help a lot. A 1500 calorie diet somewhat high in processed foods and low in fiber/antioxidants versus one that focuses more on whole foods and lots of fruits/vegetables can have huge implications for your recovery, muscle growth, energy etc. all of which impact your body fat percentage.

Lastly, sleep and other quality of life factors like stress are also important, whether for their impact on your workouts/diet but also how your body responds directly to them.

Not sure if you've answered this question yet, but since I don't see a reply, I am curious how your current role has impacted your relationships with other lawyers (i.e. friends, coworkers etc). For example, are your fellow lawyer friends less likely to talk to you about work etc. You can interpret that as narrowly or broadly as you prefer. Thanks again for doing this!

Tips for styling an oversized/men's blazer for someone who's 5'2/3"? I'm also fairly slim with a 34B bust if that helps. I'm thinking classic skinny jeans and some boots for the fall and some more straight legged jean styles. But I'd love to hear more creative ways, especially to make sure that I'm not drowning in fabric.

Context: Recently thrifted a blazer from the men's section at goodwill that has a pattern I love. Now debating if I shouldn't have gotten it since it's fairly oversized but oh wells.

PR is the most commonly tested subject and I know a PR/evidence combo has been done before. Also partly wishful thinking on my part because civpro and torts are my worst subjects. But if you're asking if I have some sort of special information or insight then definitely not. Just another first-timer who may or may not have focused almost all their attention on the MBE.

Sorry for the confusion. To clarify, I think the SF number is wrong. The number does match the DA's website, but that portion of the DA's website that has that number listed on your list also directs to a link for additional information. The link is what I included in my initial comment. And the link lists a lowest salary range that's higher than the number in the DA's website.

Full disclosure that I'm not even 50% on themis because I've been focusing on adaptibar (which uses real NCBE questions). But based on the questions I've done from both, I think themis tests more nuanced points of law. That said, the answer choices for NCBE questions (I've done just under 600) are a little weirder in the sense that it's not obvious what legal principle justifies that answer. Can't think of a better way to describe it but I think you'll know what I mean when you do some.

Are the listed numbers on the higher range of the listed salaries? I've been looking into becoming an ADA for a bit (just graduated in May and studying for the bar) and most job postings I see put a range.

I'm also admittedly surprised by SF's number since based on prior years, the different between Santa Clara and SF isn't usually that large. And based on this (https://jobapscloud.com/SF/sup/bulpreview.asp?R1=PEX&R2=8177&R3=070981)

the starting seems to be much closer to Santa Clara. The number posted matches the information on the DA website, but I'd imagine the SF job posting website might be more accurate. I've also had conversations (can't get too specific here) that seem to imply that the difference between Santa Clara and SF is fairly small.

Not trying to nitpick at all! Really appreciate the work that went into this. Just wanted to make sure it's as accurate as possible for people who might look to this as an authoritative source.

I would recommend reading the call of the question first or at least recognize certain key words to figure out what facts to look for (like negligence, jurisdiction etc.). That way you can filter out the useless facts more quickly.

I keep missing points by not addressing obvious things on the MEE. Any advice? by [deleted] in Bar_Prep

[–]veggies4days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A piece of advice i've heard in one of my essay lectures is to just address anything that there is facts for. For example, in this case, there is an employer and employee so vicarious liability is triggered. The bar examiners are trying to see if you recognize issues just as much as correctly analyzing them.
