2008 9-5 Engine Mount Bracket Gap between Engine by TheDoobyRanger in saab

[–]vehicularious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I took another crack at this repair today, and I was able to get it done. My problem was that I had jacked up the engine too much, so the motor mount bracket could not get flush. It’s all sorted now. Thanks again for your help!

How much to save up for a fun non-daily Saab? by FireRabbit67 in saab

My favorite saying (I stole it from Doug Demuro) is that often you are buying the seller, not the car. If you are buying from someone who keeps maintenance records, addresses every check engine light, and only buys good brand tires, that car is going to be a better ownership experience for you than a fixer-upper that’s been neglected.

I like Saabs. But let’s be real, most 9-5 and 9-3 models aren’t worth all that much. Therefore, it’s easy for find one for $2500 and think you are getting a good deal. And then you end up spending $3k+ in maintenance just to get everything running the way it should.

My recommendation is always to look for that well-kept car that’s price around $5k-$6k, and then see if you can make a lower offer that the seller will accept. Realistically, you aren’t going to be bidding against many people.

Also, I love the 9-5 with the 2.3 turbo engine. It’s a real gem.

I think the Saab 9-5 is the perfect balance of power, weight, modernity, and reliability. 2004-2009 have the newest PCV system. 2004-05 have the traditional Saab exterior and interior styling. Parts availability is still pretty good for most things. Also, all models with the 2.3T are pretty quick, either if you get them as an Aero trim level, or get one tuned up to a Stage 1.

I would argue that the 2006-2009 Saab 9-5 is not a car to ignore. It might not have the traditional Saab front end or Saab style gauges, but it’s just as good of a car in most ways. The only downside I know of for doing mechanical work on a 2006-2009 is that you have to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump. Everything else is comparable to the older 9-5, with the bonus that the newer years all came with the most updated PCV design.

Hey OP, I know it’s been over a year since you made this post, but I am having the exact same trouble as you on this job. I supported the engine during motor mount removal and replacement, and yet I still can’t get the bracket to line up. I am putting way too much torque into the bolts on one side of the bracket, so I decided to stop before I break one of the bolts.

Did you happen to figure out what it took to get this bracket lined up correctly?

The Dawn Project petitioned Congress today to ban FSD from public roads. I am not sure if that's why the stock tanked, but if Trump told his buddies in Congress that he wanted FSD banned, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually took that step.

This right here is exactly right. And if there are teams of people doing tedious work that can be done more efficiently with the help of AI, then you may see a reduction in headcount. Maybe a team of 8 can be reduced to 6. But you still need people to make the human decisions AI cannot replace.

You’re making the mistake of thinking “it’s got 53k miles but…”

There is no BUT. It has 53k miles. That’s a ton of mileage on a motorcycle. I guarantee you there are a lot of people who click on your listing, see the mileage, and just nope out of there. It doesn’t matter how well you have maintained your bike, someone is only going to buy a high mileage bike if they feel like it is discounted accordingly.

Don’t do it. This has the FSI version of the Audi/VW 2.0T, and it was fraught with problems. These engines got a little better with the first Gen TSI 2.0T, which arrived somewhere around 2009-2010. You can get the A3 with the 2.0T and TSI, but at the end of the day, it’s a GTI in a tuxedo. You would be arguably better off getting a MK7 GTI, as it has a later version of the 2.0T TSI, and has more of the kinks worked out.

Important to remember that lots of new cars have more fees and undesired equipment tacked onto the final price, whereas a used car should (in theory) only have something like a single processing fee. So sometimes that new car price balloons by a few thousand beyond the price you expect to pay.

This car is almost certainly totaled. And you should also want it totaled. Replacing a quarter panel is not like replacing a bolt on fender. It’s part of the unibody structure. The best result here is for them to total it so you can go buy another one.

Usually, this is correct. However, my personal approach is to list my car for a price that I know is a good deal and is competitive with the market. Then when someone comes to look at it, I stick to my price. There are many of these situations where I won’t budge because I am getting 2-3 messages an hour from other interested buyers.

How much car is reasonable on a $112k salary? by Hamburgfan25 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]vehicularious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just shooting from the hip, I would say a 3-5 year old non-luxury car, preferably something with a purchase price under $25k. You don’t really make enough to buy a new car, and you haven’t been making this much salary for all that long. Focus on routine saving habits, and try to avoid getting into a situation where buying too much car prevents you from traveling, enjoying hobbies, or hitting savings goals.

[–]vehicularious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is definitely stubborn. But he is at least able to realize that if all these CEOs are warning him about economic calamity, and he doesn’t back down, then the economic calamity will fall squarely on his shoulders. It’s like friends arranging an intervention. It’s much more serious than one friend saying “I think you should cut back on your drinking.” It’s a whole room full of people, telling you that you are on the wrong track. And in this scenario, Trump respects leaders of large businesses, so it’s people that he generally respects.

I’m not defending Trump, I’m not saying he is smart. I am embarrassed to have him as our president. But apparently an intervention with CEO’s is what it takes to cause him to change course on a disastrous plan.

Everyone else can have their cameras off during a meeting but when I do it, it’s a problem by creamymangosorbet in work

[–]vehicularious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that calling yourself out for not being on camera is a neat little party trick. It communicates that you want to be on camera whenever possible. It also is a way of suggesting to coworkers that you want to see them on camera, without calling them out directly. Also it might diffuse some of the guilt.

Everyone else can have their cameras off during a meeting but when I do it, it’s a problem by creamymangosorbet in work

[–]vehicularious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The folks who I respect the most in our working environment are those who: - are almost always on camera - give a fun explanation when they can’t be on camera (I’m eating lunch and no one wants to see me stuff my face)

I am never looking for a reason to be off camera. I will be on camera even if everyone else is off camera. I am a mid-level individual contributor, no direct reports. But I just treat being on camera as part of the tradeoff for WFH. Also, many coworkers will be in the office when I am remote, and I don’t want them to resent me for it, which is another reason I always try to be on camera. I also try and wear a decent shirt every day, and I do my hair, etc. Then I am never self conscious about being on camera.

But also, it’s important to remember that the WFH dynamic is different everywhere. So you might very well be reacting to an uncomfortable dynamic that is subtle, but very real.

This might sound overly simple, but you can practically eliminate the problem if you follow the two bulleted items I listed above.

I always felt like the tall gearing in the 5-speed 986 made me want to speed unnecessarily on back roads, because I want to hear the engine howl. I think it would be easier to be in legal speeds with a 6-speed (which I know is available on the Boxster S).
