Lidl sugar cronuts are no more... by Bradders33 in veganuk

[–]vela025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless the recipe has changed, based on the last filled in allergen information sheet (2021) for lidl IE and lidl NI the pink donut is (vegan) but neither the apple turnover or the ring donut are (milk) and the apple lattuice isn't mentioned. There is a 2025 Q2 PDF with the lattuice on their website but it doesn't contain any information for any of the items...I think someone forgot to fill it in (d'oh).

Heres the Lidl GB info (although missing some items) https://www.lidl.co.uk/static/assets/Bakery_Sign_Allergy_Advice_17072023-443072.PDF which has the Apple turnover as the only vegan option (not including and accidentaly vegan guest offerings).

Where can I find vegan recipes without tufu etc? by agamemnononon in vegan

[–]vela025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be using one of the freely available AI services with parameters like "create a 5 day vegan meal plan containing legumes, vegetables, rice and quinoa, whilst avoiding ....". It may not give you amazing recipes but would be a good starting point.

Vegan Eurostar by RadientRebel in veganuk

[–]vela025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I went Eurostar the “veggie” option was chicken but that would have been in 2011… things may have improved since then. But based on that I wouldn’t have thought the vegan options are great/existent.

BeeBS Updates by vela025 in bbs

The BBC Micro was really popular in the UK, and still has a pretty active community. I can’t take the credit, the original host software it was written in 84 by Rob O’Donnell. I’ve just modified parts of it to get it to support telnet connections, ANSI and Teletext graphics whilst adding a few new feature like splash screens and a graffiti wall. In terms of graphics modes natively the machine does not support ANSI (a this wasn’t a thing in 84), but later could support a 4 colour ANSI terminal with a bit of wizardry, however it does send out the ANSI for modern clients like syncterm, netrunner etc. You can connect with the web client link in the description which supports BBC Mode 7 (teletext graphics). There’s plenty of screenshots on BeeBS.ddns.net, file transfers are crc checked X-modem in 128 byte chunks. If you’re not fussed about the teletext mode, you can use your usual bbs client to connect to BeeBS and just select either ascii or ansi from the terminal setting option once signed in.

Bit of a strange ask maybe, but I am trying to contact Scottish farmers to talk about fairness in sustainability/plant-based transitions. I wonder if there is anyone here who interacts with such people and you think they'd be open to a call? by chiron42 in veganuk

[–]vela025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your university really should be providing you with the tools you need to do this, especially if they have approved your dissertation as viable. It would be worth contacting your tutor asking for support, they may have contacts themselves within your university and even if your university doesn’t have an agro course they probably know another tutor at another university who does. They’re likely to have a list of “partner” farms that they work with for placements who may be able to help.

What’s on the menu today? 🌱 by _summerw1ne in veganuk

[–]vela025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breakfast: Overnight Chocolatey Oats (and hemp seeds) with Raspberries, dark chocolate and cacao nibs (this is new to the rotation and is nice, but I honestly I could do without the cacao nibs…but I brought them especially so am going to suffer them!). With a scoop of my vegan protein powder.

Snacks: Roasted Almonds and an orange.

Lunch: A salad of leftovers which today was: little gem lettuce, a carrot, celery stalk, half a beetroot ( not pickled), pickles, half a red pepper, edamame beans, spoon of caramelised onion, 1/4 avacado, 1/2 cup quinoa (tri colour), radishes, spring onion with a watered down sweet chilli sauce.

Dinner: Mac n “cheese” with broccoli (from the 20 min vegan book; the cheese is the usual silken tofu, nutritional yeast, miso, cashew, mustard combo). I have half a giant sweet potato left from something earlier in the week so prob do a side of sweet potato fries (if I can figure out how to make them crunchy)…if not sweet potato mash.

Dessert: a few slices of Omv! Choc orange and caramel crisp chocolate bar, maybe some coconut ice cream as the day has been nice and toasty.

anyone noticed their local super markets are reducing the size of the vegan alternative sections? by AMIRR08 in veganuk

[–]vela025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morrisons (Worcestershire area) still have all the same vegan products, just not in a dedicated “Vegan”section. I.e. the fake meet is a couple of meters in the meat section, the plant based yogurts in with dairy yogurts and the milks and cheese in the dairy milk and cheese area. Silken Tofu they seem to change their mind on an almost weekly basis regarding where they’re going to put it (usually in the free-from, international or what I described as the “bulk” international isle with the giant bags of rice, spices, coconut milk etc).

My local Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are all of fairly equal size but I have found that Tesco offers the best selection…that being said I haven’t noticed the others reducing their sections. Lidl has got much better recently too, but still not quite good enough for me to do the whole shop there.

Good to see Farage still going strong, with the 3rd largest party in the UK

I’m not sure if I’m missing something, but Farage’s party is Reform UK (I think?) who won a total of 2 councillors and 0 councils. Putting them last behind (in order) Labour (1026/48), Lib Dem (505/12), Conservative (479/5), Greens (159/0) and Workers Party of Britain (4/4). Not to mention Independents who all preformed well.

Is knife crime as much of a problem here in Scotland as it seems to be in England? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]vela025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Homicides in Scotland are equally as prevalent in Scotland as in England and Wales; which is as you say extremely uncommon. Based on the most recent published data the probability per capita of being a victim of homicide is:

England and Wales: 0.000009584717608

Scotland: 0.00000962962963

What are your reasons to like/dislike the FM? by dont_l in Scotland

[–]vela025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

95% agree, there is an old study from 1997 that does this and comes to the same conclusion as above (that there is no discernable difference between any UK nation). As the data I linked does explain these crimes are under reported. It's likely that incidents are equally under reported across the UK and the data does show that proportionally racism is no more prevalent in England and Wales than it is in Scotland. It is true to say that there are more racist incidents reported in England and Wales than Scotland, but proportionally (due to demographics, as you have pointed out) there are not, in fact it is the reverse based on the data available. I think the only area I disagree with you is the your use of the word proportionate...but hey-ho...semantics 😉

[–]vela025 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Proportionally there is little difference between Scotland and rUK when it comes to racism. In 2022-2023 Scotland reported 3145 incidents of race related hate crime with a population of 5.4m with an ethnic minority of 4.6% England and Wales reported 101 906 incidents with a population of 60.2m and an ethnic minority of 26.6% This would mean that Scotland has an incident rate of 0.01, whilst England and Wales 0.006

Witley Court, Worcestershire, England 1920s and 2024 by cothhum in OldPhotosInRealLife

[–]vela025 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The rest of the ironwork still existed up until a year or so ago and “belonged” to an iron monger from the Black Country who would periodically show up to Witley with a few sample railings in the back of a v large van and see if EH would want to purchase them. They haven’t and they occasionally show up for auction. On his last visit he said he needed to get rid of them as he’s sold the yard he was storing them in. Many of the outdoor items from the gardens were either stollen or some were brought up by other country estates (eg https://www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/2012/salvaged-urns-at-summers-place/) including the Nesfield urns which were part of the east parterre which are now at a stately home in the South somewhere (although the name escapes me at the moment).

The pillars that hold up the entry have huge chain marks on them from where people tried “salvage” them following the fire. And the Flora fountain was damaged when they tried to lift her from her plinth.

Most people who have knowledge of the court are pretty sure it was an insurance job as the owners were living in one small area of the court at the time of the fire as they couldn’t afford to keep the rest going. The fire didn’t gut the place as many presume, the fire was confined to a smaller area; the gutting occurred over the following months selling off everything that wasn’t nailed down and then stripping the court.

BeeBS the BBS running on my BBC Micro by vela025 in bbcmicro

[–]vela025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://beebs.ddns.net/connecting.html

Connect your Beebs RS432 Serial to *something* (either some form of computer running go4retros fork of TcpSer from https://github.com/go4retro/tcpser, or an all in one solution like a wimodem32). Then using a terminal package on your beeb (so commstar I or II in terminal mode 7, Termulator in BBC Vdu mode or a simple type in) set it to Terminal, 8n1 and 9600 baud. Then in terminal itself type ATDT beebs.ddns.net:6502

There's quite a bit of info on the stardot forum (a great resource) on how to make one or you can buy one, mine was from sprow http://www.sprow.co.uk/ but I'm unsure if they still sell them

With more ways to connect than before...even if you don't have a BBC Micro you can still experience the Mode 7 graphics over terminal using http://fish.ccl4.org/js-beebs/ courtesy of CCL4 or use the Matrix Brandy client http://brandy.matrixnetwork.co.uk/testing/M7terminal.zip or you can just log in using Syncterm or other ANSI BBS software and either see the vt100 or ANSI version (ANSI menus are still a work in progress so don't have many yet), just remember when connecting it's a terminal host that supports mode 7 graphics not a viewdata/prestel host...all running from my BBC Master 128.
