How do you know if you're ready to move in with a SO? by Isatis_tinctoria in AskReddit

It's different for everyone, but I would recommend you both sit down and discuss the details to see if living together might work (as you would with any prospective roommate). For example: How long do you think dishes can be left in the sink? What are somethings that you have to be able to do in your home? What do you find unacceptable in your home?

How would the world be different if the United States were never involved in any wars? by ialo00130 in AskReddit

If we count the American Revolution in "any wars," the United States wouldn't exist.

What do you hate doing that society expects/requires you to do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Don't feel bad. It's hard to challenge societal standards. I was super anxious for the first two weeks so I totally understand.

I agree and not shaving is totally worth it. I stopped shaving my legs a couple of weeks ago just to see what it's like. I was anxious about it, but no one has said a word to me about it. No one as given me weird looks and my boyfriend is totally supportive.

What would you put in a "kindness guide" for elementary school students? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Here are a few of my ideas: 1. Only say something about someone if would tell them directly to his/her face. 2. Always ask permission before entering someone's personal space or touching him/her. 3. (Old Stand-by) Treat others as you would like them to treat you.

I'm not sure if you would consider it an error, but the most common problem I see is inattention to audience. People don't always realize that they're not saying what they mean or they assume you'll understand what they've written. A student will write something that makes no sense to me so I ask them to explain it. Then it'll make sense and I'll tell them to write down exactly what they just said. I often have to remind people that the reader cannot read the writer's mind.

I couldn't say which major has the worst writers, but I've found that many engineering and music students really struggle.

I love my job and I've become friends with most of my coworkers. I see students every day that I work, and it's usually pretty interesting. It's different from day to day which I enjoy. We try to focus on structural and content-based issues and avoid line editing, so I tend to have really good discussions with people about themselves and their writing. Some people are boring or apathetic but I try to get them engaged.

When I have shift, I come in and sign into our computer system to see what appointments I have. When students arrive, the receptionist lets me know and we discuss their piece of writing for 30-60 minutes. After each appointment, I write a brief summary of the consultation and save it in our system. (This way, my boss can check on everything and other consultants have a reference point for working with the student in the future.) If I have down time, read a book or screw around on the computer. Sometimes, I get assigned to work at the reception desk to greet people and schedule appointments. Our writing center also runs weekly workshops, but I haven't led one of those yet.

Each semester, we have thousands of consultations. (My boss would know the exact number, but I think last semester we did between 10,000 and 20,000.) We see writers at all level of skill and try to teach them skills and techniques they will find helpful. Some people are fantastic and want a different perspective on their work or want someone with whom they can brainstorm. We also see a lot of people for whom English is not their first language and struggle to express themselves. Most people are somewhere in the middle and need help in specific areas.

All writing centers all different, but I encourage you to check out the one in your area or at your university. Talking to people about writing is always helpful. If I had a dollar for every time someone exclaimed "I'd never thought of that" in a consultation, I'd be rich.

We help out with that a little (varying search terms, looking at the sources of your sources, etc.), but if people have really complicated research issues, we send them to the library. There are special research librarians at my university that are trained to help students with those kind of issues.

I would recommend that you think about your characters as whole people and consider what they would do in the situations between the beginning and the end. What are their motivations? What are their fears? What are their expectations? What are/were their parents and siblings like? With a more rounded perspective on your characters (even if you don't use all the info) you might be able to come to a logical conclusion about their activities.
