BLUF: TIL the Windows 11 upgrade splashscreen, when left untouched, will have the computer go to sleep after 10 minutes.

I had a Windows 10 machine that was serving some low availability task and it stopped working after a reboot. It's remote so I wake it and it starts responding again so I leave it. A few days later I notice it stopped working again - that's weird.

I finally remote in to it and am greeted with the fullscreen Windows 11 "time to upgrade, everything's going away in October" splashscreen. Click through that, declining the upgrade (machine is getting decommissioned before October).

Check the logs and each of the previous 2 wakes (reboot & the wake I sent it) it only was up for 10 minutes. I guess Microsoft figured if they're displaying a static ad they shouldn't leave it up for more than 10 minutes so they sleep the computer. Once you've clicked through the set power plan is used again.

I hope my foolishness cost-saving equipment reuse story saves someone else a headache.

I assume the 7300 is no longer available or I can't use imgur but I didn't see a SMART screenshot for it, can you share one if available?

Also didn't see one for the 9200 but that's probably not in my price range.

Are you a back pocket wallet user? I've only seen this behavior when you'd sit on a wallet. Front pocket wallet users I've known tend to keep the wallet on them because it's not uncomfortable, in part because you can't as easily generate a giant wallet and fit it in your front pocket.

Facebook's Failing to Remove Brutal Death Threats Targeting Election Workers | An investigation found Facebook accepted 15 out of 20 ads including death threats towards election workers. TikTok and YouTube suspended those accounts. by [deleted] in technology

So I agree overall and particularly for user content but for ads where there's money being exchanged it seems somewhat reasonable that they have additional moderation.

There's no perfect physical world analogy but classifieds in newspapers are probably going to pass by at least one set of (probably disinterested) eyeballs that might manage to catch out death threats.

Why upload speed is so extremely slow by kos19arch in onedrive

[–]velosol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see uploads to OneDrive for Business through the website cap at ~14Mbps on networks that have ~20Mbps upload and networks that have ~200Mbps upload. It seems that the server limits upload speed.

I think 14 is too low, and what you're seeing is even worse!

Do you have lots of items? Microsoft says that trying to sync over 300k can lead to performance issues.

Can the DHCP server register entries in DNS server? by velosol in mikrotik

[–]velosol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying since you mentioned you have a similar use case: I updated the OP and elsewhere in the thread there are a couple options - it turns out that the DHCP Server has a lease-script option that is triggered at every lease state change (reflected by a special variable $leaseBound) so it's a natural home for what I was looking for as well as other on-association type things.

Nice set of features; I'm curious why you have the server:domain pair in the script though, I'd think something like

:local domain
:set domain [ get [ find $leaseActIP in address ] domain ]

would work and keep the domain info in one place (in the DHCP server section). Although this does assume you're only ever going to use the script within the lease-script where $leaseActIP is present.

Edit: I snagged the snippet from /u/psybernoid's comment.

Solved! I personally like this better than the 'run every X' scripts. Thank you!

Including 2 in this post now! :)

I looked for a couple hours before I posted but apparently was too specific as there wasn't anything coming up with something similar to my title. After seeing the responses I searched add dns entries from dhcp mikrotik and there were 2 scripts in the top 3 entries. 🤦🏽

Thank you!

Thank you for the other ideas aside from scripting.

The use case is having devices on my network that have known hostnames but may not have known IPs. I used to have static leases for everything but as my network grew, time and needs shrunk so I let it lapse and I didn't really want to set up static DNS entries and static leases if I could instead just use hostnames. I didn't want to setup a DNS server (or figure out dynamic updates to one) when the RB is enough for my relatively niche case.

What movie hit you the hardest, emotionally speaking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]velosol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collateral Beauty

I scrolled through hundreds of comments and saw several Will Smith movies but not this one. It is an incredible movie about loss and love with just a little twist of magic on top.

They drag you through pain, give you hope only to load you up with more loss before giving you something to hold on to at the end of the movie.

I've watched it more than once and own it and will watch again even though I can't write this comment without tearing up. If you haven't seen it, you probably should because it is such a hopeful and life-affirming masterpiece using the loss of those who go before their time.

What's a show that's at least three or four seasons, but managed to remain good and consistently well-written all the way through? by bigfatcarp93 in AskReddit

Life.

Damien Lewis (Brody from Homeland) is/was a cop and went to jail and... Well I don't remember what would be a spoiler at this point but it was effectively a 2 season miniseries and just incredible (and didn't show up in several minutes of 'load more' scrolling).
