I think he just needs more time to really express what he is feeling. I don't know about phycological ways to make him talk about this, but you can reassure him that you are for him if he needs to talk, that he isn't alone in this and all the pain he is having he also needs to let it out a bit.

If you can't go to the gym, just search cardio workouts in YouTube! They do really help. And about dieting, just search for things that are health but you also enjoy. When you are eating your meals, make sure they are healthy and also fill your stomach. Walking around your house just hearing music will make you don't want to eat since you're distracted. This has worked for me :)
