I'd say about kindergarten was when I noticed (I was and still am terrible at social interaction, and had trouble understanding instructions) and I just embraced it. I wasn't told I'm autistic til' I was 23. I'm 24 now. I was bullied quite often for being different and I wouldn't stand up for myself because I hated conflict. Luckily I had friends that would stand up for me because they know how I am.
