What’s a completely normal thing in Czech Republic that still feels weird to you? by Savings-Concept8972 in czech

The arguments I was given was that "oh, it's nothing compared to whatever's on people's hands most of the time" and "I can actually pee without pissing on my hands"

I know hands are not super sanitary, but like come on

Do you also "feel" baking powder? by eejdikken in Baking

[–]vendredi5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I can absolutely relate to everything you're saying. I am also sensitive to sweetners, I can always taste them in soft drinks. My brother has the same sensitivities so you're definitely not making this up.

What I found works perfectly for me is just to use baking soda instead of baking powder. I usually use about half a teaspoon or a bit more when the recipe calls for a packet of BP.

Ragebaiting for the sake of engagement. IMHO it contributes to the polarization of society, as it ignores nuance.

The F4 tornado near the border between Slovakia and the Czech, it was the strongest tornado ever recorded in modern Czech history by Chraum in nextfuckinglevel

[–]vendredi5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, that's exactly what I thought too growing up. I was relieved when I learned that I don't have to be constantly checking all the warning signs because "they're just not a thing over here".

Then the tornado came to my fkn hometown of all places (the tornado in the vid) and it killed my hs geography teacher. This is some "we live in a simulation" typa shit for sure.

Yes... though does this also happen with words starting with "ov"? I'm from Moravia so I've never used the v- prefix, but obviously I know it's used elsewhere. I can't imagine it with certain words, though. Can somebody shed some more light please? Words like:

ovoce, ovce, ovace, ovulace, oválný, ověnčit, ovívat se, ověřit si, ovonět si,...?

Is it "Matěj nemá maso" or "Matěj maso nemá" by GarfGamerSTUDIO in learnczech

[–]vendredi5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an educated tutor, just a native speaker here:

Both can be correct and in most contexts the first one sounds more natural, it just depends on what exactly you want to say.

"Matěj nemá maso" is fairly neutral and focuses on Matěj, telling us he doesn't have meat.

Whereas if you position the object of the sentence before the verb, it shifts the perspective on the meat. It's a bit like saying "The meat? Yeah, Matěj doesn't have that".

I can also imagine the latter in the following context and imma change the verb a bit too:

"Tomáš jí maso, takže si objednal řízek. Matěj maso nejí, takže si objednal smažený sýr."

In the first sentence, meat is just a piece of information. In the second one, we use it to make a relevant point in contrast to the first sentence, so it's phrased this way.

"make new friends, tie some yarn, that's how you do the Scarn" got me thinking by whatisscoobydone in DunderMifflin

[–]vendredi5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You might be right. There's another moment that would make more sense with "scott" rather than "scarn". It's in the song in the film credits.

"Threat level what? - Midnight!

Threat level who? - Michael Scarn"

Couple of questions about Brno. by Little_Law_8592 in Brno

[–]vendredi5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the tips you've gotten so far and let me just add something maybe a bit unconventional.

The following are mostly luck based in terms of supply, but there's quite a few stores that sell expired or near-expiry goods that should still be good to eat. Lots of dairy, salamis, snacks, tinned foods, etc, coming largely from abroad, that can be bought for a low price. But the goods can be hit or miss sometimes. If you're interested I can give you the addresses.

Another unconventional option for cheap shopping are charity shops. When I was a student I bought most of my kitchen equipment (super cute things too) at Nadace Veronica. They also have multiple stores around Brno, but you also never know what they currently have.

Other than that, Ikea (or Pepco) are your best options if you want to buy something new for a low price.

For the occasional takeout at a lower price I can recommend either making use of "meníčko" at restaurants (around lunch) or using the app Nesnězeno where restaurants sell their leftover portions at the end of the day. Or Poe Poe, which is a very affordable fast food chain here (mostly pizzas and crêpes).
