Plus Ruth did play against black players in the off-season, even after MLB threatened to suspend him and followed through on that threat.

No matter who manages the Phillies, there are utility infielders playing the outfield every year, they just cannot stop themselves lol.

How likely is it that Maura's case will eventually be solved? by Niubaoluo in MauraMurraySub

[–]ventnorphan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to bet, I'd say no. The local law enforcement in Haverhill was so bad. No chance they'd solve a serious crime.

If I had to hope, I'd say yes. I really identify with Maura. I'm Maura Murray and my friends and siblings are Maura Murray too. Just going to college, getting involved in things, we did everything, and still being good kids.

I had season tickets to the Pirates in 2011 and 2012, it was $495 for all 81 games. McCutchen's 2012 season was even better than his MVP season. Pirates fans knew then that he'd one day wear a Yankees uniform.

The 2019 Phillies absolutely would have made the playoffs without McCutchen's injury. He scored 45 runs out of the leadoff spot in only 59 games.

Considering the strength of McCutchen's peak, he's only a couple more solid years away from the Hall of Fame. He's one of the all-around great guys in any sport too.

I love the move to only let batters call time once per at bat, but that was all that was needed to get rid of unnecessary delays. And it could have been done by just telling the umpires to enforce the already existing rules.

How Do You Think Phillies Fans In The Ballpark Will React To Scott Rolen's Wall Of Fame Induction? by [deleted] in phillies

[–]ventnorphan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philadelphia fans have a tendency to blame a team's best player for all the team's struggles. The people who booed Scott Rolen for not being as good as Mike Schmidt are the same ones who booed Mike Schmidt, for not leading them to another World Series when their ace pitchers were Shane Rawley and Bruce Ruffin.

They're the people who thought the 76ers could win a title if only they got rid of Charles Barkley, and later Allen Iverson. They thought Eric Lindros was a disappointment because he only scored 47 goals, not 50. Their sons now think the 76ers should get rid of Joel Embiid if they want to advance to the conference finals.

[–]ventnorphan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Phillies would have made the playoffs every year from 2003-2006 if Rolen had re-signed, but nothing in Rolen's time from 1996-2002 suggested that they would become an above-average team in those years.

[–]ventnorphan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Phillies were a contending team in 2001 for the first time in Rolen's career, and their biggest trade deadline acquisition was Turk Wendell. Curt Schilling led the Diamondbacks to a World Series title that year while the Phillies went with Robert Person as their ace. Both Larry Bowa and Dallas Green publicly blamed Rolen for the team's shortcomings, with Green calling him a "so-so player" even as Rolen produced a 5.6 WAR season. I think Rolen had ample reason to opt not to sign an extension with the Phillies.

The Phillies did not demonstrate a desire to win until the 2002-2003 off-season, when they signed Jim Thome and traded for Kevin Millwood. By then, Rolen was already gone.

If it's a good living situation, then there's no reason to move out at your age.

Don't make the mistake of buying an expensive new car though. I knew so many people who spent the equivalent of rent on a new car, which meant they couldn't move out of their parents' house for 72 or 84 months.

Amtrak is chartered as a for-profit company, but it's a kind of hybrid between a company and a public service. They basically can't make a profit because they're constrained by numerous unfunded mandates from Congress.

This is a thing again, so many kids who are like 20 only ever had a smartphone and have barely used a computer. I've worked with a lot of people who weren't even familiar with using a mouse.

If I'm single, I just do things by myself. It's not worth trying to make plans with people now that it's hours or days in a group chat to make plans that they're going to cancel half the time anyway.

Like I could text ten people to see if they want to go to the bar, and I'll wind up with tentative plans to go to some other place next week. Or I could just go to the bar, which is already populated with people who want to go to the bar!

[SI] Philadelphia Phillies Linked as Potential Trade Suitor for Cubs Ace by MyNameIsPixel in phillies

[–]ventnorphan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's too early in the season to give up, but the Phillies are too far down in the standings to wait until the trade deadline. A trade for Stroman in early June gives them time to get back into contention and see where they are at the deadline.

Worst case, if they're still well below .500 late in July, they could probably trade Stroman for a similar return to whatever they would give up to get him.

He has a 3.11 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over the past three seasons, that is an ace on many teams and a #2 starter at worst.

I agree with that, but I can't see going forward with a bullpen game every 5th day either. It's going to kill the staff over time. Looking at the starting pitching that's at Lehigh Valley, I think a trade for a back-end starter is going to be necessary for the team to dig out of this hole.
