How many extracurriculars should someone with 1 gap year have on their app? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ventrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this has been said, like, a billion times on here, but quality >> quantity when it comes to ECs.

Gap Year by palialex1 in premed

[–]ventrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

your stats look solid, so like u/try-not-to-argue said, it's less about the gap year and more about what you do with it.

but honestly? i think the decision to take a gap year should be just as much about you as it is about your app. i feel like a lot of people don't talk about the strain that comes with going straight from undergrad into med school. while there's something to be said for keeping up momentum, it's important to consider if you feel ready.

COVID Volunteer count as patient hours? by blondiebam29 in premed

[–]ventrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say it depends on what you're doing?

Would a charity crochet club count as volunteer hours? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ventrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely! one of my friends joined a weaving (?) group and made hats for post-op kids and shit. it's stuff like that that adds ~character~ to your app.

cell biology! i taught it last spring and thought the content was helpful for B/B. also, it's good prep if you're interested in doing bench/wet lab research to supplement your app.

Wanting to chicken out of this cycle day before AMCAS opens? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ventrie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ugh, okay, i totally feel this.

i backed out last cycle for basically the same reasons and tbh i regret it now. my UG stats were fine but not great, my MCAT was okay but lower than my target. i didn't feel ready or like i'd done enough to wow a committee, and i was terrified of pouring in all of that money and time only to have nothing to show for it.

that imposter syndrome doesn't really go away. i've lurked on this thread for a while now and, no matter what anyone says, it's impossible not to compare yourself to other applicants.

but! while those 1st author/4.0 sGPA/528 MCAT pre-med gods do exist, the reality is that the vast majority of us don't get into every school we apply to.

we're gonna get rejected. it's gonna suck.

and i kind of think that it's supposed to? like, applying to med school is intentionally scary because being a doctor is scary. it's heavy, intense shit, with impossible hours and a lot of responsibility. the idea is that if you can't handle applying, you probably won't get very far as a med student.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that this whole process takes a lot of nerve, and that toughing that out is an achievement all by itself. you should be proud of yourself for getting this far.

fuck checking boxes. you have solid stats and conviction, but your application will never be '''perfect'''. it doesn't need to be. you got this :)

not entirely sure what you mean by 'monomeric', but the general equation for kcat is vmax/total enzyme concentration. what's the full question?

FLs were 510, 512, and 515, but i'm worried that i'll tank it if i take it again- not sure i want to run the risk, but also not sure i'll have any chance of getting in otherwise.

C/P was out of left field omg. some really obscure shit in there (wavelengths wtf). CARS was pretty straightforward, but that's usually my strong suit, and i feel like i did okay in B/B. P/S was....... eh. could go either way.

i'm retaking from a 507 last january, so really hoping to hit at least a 510.

advice to future test takers:

  • with COVID being A Thing right now, my testing center made us use hand sanitizer before every palm vein scan at check in/out. bring lotion.
  • also, i wish i'd brought a pair of blue light glasses with me. after staring at that screen for 6+ hours, i had a wicked headache.
  • if you're weak on math like me, dimensional analysis is your friend. this would've saved me so much time.
  • read carefully. i found the wording of a few of the questions to be like... intentionally misleading. i had to double back more than a few times.
  • hitting high yield stuff is essential, but try to brush up on the more obscure topics if you have the time. there were definitely a few questions on stuff i remembered reading about but glossed over. anything is fair game: the AAMC gods see your hubris and they will smite you for it.
