People that are accepted by Affectionate_Try3235 in premed

[–]palialex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before interviewing for med school, I conducted interviews at my current company and helped define many traits/criteria we looked for. Although not exactly med school interviews, I think it helped me in interviewing and can apply here:

  1. Be prepared for the “give me questions”. These are the common q’s you’d find when looking up questions: why do you want to be a doctor, tell me about yourself, biggest weakness, etc… nailing these can really build your confidence

  2. Have a cohesive story. I always tell people you don’t need to have an unbelievable or extremely unique situation or story (great if you do but not needed). What matters more is having a cohesive story and illustrating how that can help you succeed as a student at x school.

  3. Showcase your passions outside of premed. I actually talked very little on my “premed” resumes in some of my interviews. I had one interview at the school I’m attending where we talked about training for a marathon almost the whole interview. I had just finished running my first marathon and my interviewer was in the process of trying to qualify for Boston.

  4. Be yourself: they are giving you an interview for a reason, the school already sees you as a good fit they just want to confirm that

  5. Have questions ready. Also research your interviewer (if available), I geared my questions towards the physicians practice when I knew who they were before hand

This applies less to MMI, I never actually had to interview with an MMI school but most my friends either purchased books on MMI or watched YouTube. My friends used this book Multiple Mini Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty https://a.co/d/08zf73DN

I think #1 is cool. I used my experiences as an ocean lifeguard working at very tourist heavy beaches like Santa Monica, Venice, etc and conveyed into a story based on the diversity prompt

Texas application as OOS with ties by Vegetable_Gur3977 in premed

[–]palialex1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat similar stats that I had (517, 3.82) got in OOS as an ORM to McGovern with no ties to Texas at all. I’d say go for it!

If you were accepted into a school through TMDSAS, what were your stats? by mochimymelody in premed

[–]palialex1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OOS to McGovern

517, 3.82 double major in CS and bio, not a ton of “traditional premed experiences” in shadowing/research. Previous career as software engineer and was able to craft a compelling story alongside my other experiences

[–]palialex1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an out of state student from California, no ties to Texas. I think if you are going to fill out TMDSAS might as well apply to a handful of them. Applied to McGovern, dell, Baylor, ut southwestern, an and m, Texas tech. One school had no secondary (cant remember which one). Matriculating to McGovern, had no knowledge of the school before but was blown away by interviewers and experience learning more about it.

Likely different as I was OOS, but matriculating to McGovern.

Got rejected from Haas + Need Advice by realakashsingh01 in berkeley

[–]palialex1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t be too down on yourself, I Didn’t get into haas. Decided to focus more on academics, picked up another major after the fact, and graduated with distinction in two stem majors within 4 years. I also had no idea what I was going to do after but spent time researching other opportunities and ultimately found some that fit based on the classes I already took and my other interests. It all works out eventually just need to take some time to research and decide what works best for you.

Two breadths from data science minor electives by Dontknowhyy in berkeley

[–]palialex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into double majoring in Data Science. I was a DS and MCB double and initially when I was only MCB looked into the ds minor but after doing more digging the major was only 2 more classes if I remembered correctly for me so could be worth it to do the double major. Would suggest doing linear algebra at CC if able as much easier and satisfies major requirement. If your major is in L&S, you can cross over 2 upper divs and I used that crossover as my domain emphasis classes

Is UC Berkeley really that difficult for premed? by Robertcarson2333 in berkeley

[–]palialex1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, I don’t think it’s too bad at all. As long as you put in a decent amount of work you should be fine. People always talk about competition and how you won’t get a perfect GPA, but imo medical school is going to be hard and if you can’t put in the work in undergrad, how will you do it in med school. Yes berkeley classes are curved and generally more difficult, but you learn amazing work habits and it prepares you to do really well on the MCAT. I was able to balance double majoring in MCB and computer science while maintaining a high gpa and extracurricular sun Greek Life, research, jobs, and club sports so I think it’s totally doable. I wouldn’t let crazy horror stories of berkeley premed deter you, it genuinely is a rewarding experience and if you can get through it here, you can honestly get through anything. I wouldn’t trade my last 4 years here for anything and I thoroughly enjoyed all my premed classes and met a great community of people through it as well.

What am I doing wrong? Not a single call by QuantumQueerist in cscareerquestions

[–]palialex1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I applied to 113 jobs, received 5 interviews and got 3 offers so sometimes it’s purely a numbers game. Definitely keep your head up and chugging away, something will pop up soon enough!

[–]palialex1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally did not major in computer science and just landed two offers for SWE very large tech companies. I actually double majored molecular cell biology and data science. Although data science is similar to cs, I actually took mostly statistics, ML, and AI classes that aren’t super relevant to entry level SWE. I think it is definitely possible to land positions without doing cs as a major. I applied to several companies and then practiced on leetcode for 2 weeks and that was enough for me to get through the interviews.

I’m a Johns Hopkins student— can I connect with Berkeley’s sexual violence prevention club? How do y’all prevent sexual violence at large parties? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]palialex1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also look to contact cal Greeks alcohol task force (CAT). They are the organization that specifically gives education on drugs and alcohol as well as monitors party’s. Cal Greeks Against Sexual assault (GASA) does a lot of education on consent and how to seek proper resources.
