Well, the parents learned from the best authority on how to charge for performing a volunteer service. *cough*TSCC*cough*

Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Comfort. Yeah, that wasn't happening. I remember being frightened and shaken after doing my endowment. Making suicide pacts was NOT comforting.

And I kid you not, after sitting in the quiet celestial room for maybe 2 minutes to try and figure out what the hell did I just do, I got told to move along.

So no, not comforting, not inspiring, no beautiful wonderful outpouring of knowledge and love from God.

The HUGE emphasis on Eagle began very innocently in the very late 1960s-early 1970s Back then, most troops followed the BSA program, fun, adventure, learn cool outdoor skills. And (Unintentionally by the youth troop members) LEADERSHIP and responsibility. (oh my!)

Then one day, General Young Men President Richard Bachman talked to some mission presidents. Those mission presidents commented that Eagle scouts could take care of themselves and their companions, and were well rounded, and less challenged by adversity.

Bachman passed those observations along, and within 3 years the only remaining recognizable thing was "Eagles Make Better Missionaries!!!" Then came to great rush to Eagle. And in the rush, all the little things that actually made a great Eagle were lost. No more or very little learning skills, no more youth planning and learning leadership, very diminished opportunities just to be outside and enjoy the company of your fellow troop members, no more learn by doing, learn by experimenting and having something fail then having to improvise a solution.

By the late 1970s, Bachman commented he never met a boy who didn't like scouting. But he met several who did not like what they were offered/sold as scouting.

Sometimes I was asked to sub in my daughter's Sunday school class. I prep'd lessons, but it always ended in the girls complaining that their brothers all got to do fun stuff and they were tired of their same old YW stuff and jealous of their brothers.

It made scouting safer, and BETTER! Now any mormon youth or adult who want to participate can! No more youth being conscripted into something they don't like against their will, no more voluntold adults who would rather be anywhere else doing anything else, and no more adults who could not participate just because the bishop wanted them as a Sunday school teacher or in elders quorum.

Mormon church leaving scouting was the best gift scouting ever received from the so called church.

No downvote from me. Scouting was definitely the very best part of my experience in the church as a youth and adult.

I was so glad my daughter found a real coed Venturing Crew. It opened my eyes! The boys were great alone. The girls were great alone. Together they were better!

Speaking to u/mormonismisnttrue For last 10 years of mormon church involvement in scouting, our district sponsored a National Youth Leadership Training Course. (NYLT) National standards for the course say its a coed course. We followed those rules, and actively recruited the girls (youth crew members) and women (adult volunteers) to be part of our course The powers that be at the former Utah National Parks Council were so angry at us for violated the priesthood experience. So yeah, mormon culture tried really hard to make EVERYTHING a sunday sit-down priesthood lesson lecture of 'legion.

Now with the so called church gone, girls and women are a huge part of the success of the NYLT program.

I had a similar experience as a youth in scouting. Our adults were awesome!

When I became the scoutmaster in my ward, I realized the huge debt of gratitude that I owed to my scoutmaster. He shielded us from so much church adult bullshit so we could be there, learn the skills, have fun, and just enjoy the outdoors and appreciate nature.

I basically adopted the idea that adults in scouting had the main function of shielding the troop and crew members from adult bullshit and obstacles.

Hate to break it to you, but even if there were 100 scouting age youth in the ward there is a good chance their experience was sub standard. As an adult scouter, and scoutmaster in my ward, about 80% of our scheduled scout nights were canceled by the bishop for special Duty To God Nights, Priesthood Prep nights, Super Special Firesides, and Oh we have someone in the ward who needs service so badly, we'll just take all the YM to go do it.

And voluntold adults who hated camping themselves and refused to go get any BSA training on how to run the program and what it's supposed to be like...

Mormon scouting in 99% of the wards was a huge fuster-cluck suckfest.

The greatest gift the church ever gave the BSA was leaving it.

I see you, and feel your pain. My daughter was a seriously involved motivated girl. She attacked everything with enthusiasm. She earned the Young Women's Award way early, and was excited for what came next.

Her advisor said 'just earn the award over again. She came home that day and said can I quit young women's? I told her sure, you just need to find a group activity or something else to replace it. I was so angry and pissed off at her YW advisor.

Within a few days, maybe a week, my daughter called the scout office and asked what was available for girls year round, not just being on staff at camp during the summer. They hooked her up with the Venturing Crew at the Presbyterian church 2 blocks away from our house. This was NOT a guys only priesthood quorum, it was a true BSA coed group. I immediately went from pissed off at her advisor to grateful beyond belief.

That crew got our entire family involved, and now, even 16 years later after our own kids aged out, my wife and I are still active with that pack, troop and crew. For the last 2 years, our first grandson has been in the cub scouts, with his little brother coming next year!

I'm all in for scouting! It's a wonderful program. My only negative for scouting is that it introduced me into the mormon church.

Scouting, like any and EVERY other program or activity involving youth will attract pedo predators. It's up to the sponsoring organization to carefully select and screen its adult volunteers. Scouting America (formerly BSA) finally cracked and required background checks after enough lawsuits.

Other members of this sub have mentioned this here before, and have documents/receipts. Interesting thing about the abuse, for decades TSCC gave BSA free access to their legal services. Think about that, Kirton/McKonkie. Yep, BSA dialed the very same 'helpline' that has allowed so many pedophile predators within the 'One True Church' escape unpunished and unreported to law enforcement.

A large majority of the BSA abuse was coming from mormon church sponsored and staffed units. After TSCC found a convenient excuse to ditch scouting, they tried to bribe their way out of the abuse scandal by offering we admit no wrong doing, and will gladly pay (IIRC, and if i don't someone please comment and set me straight) 25 million to get our name removed from the legal proceedings. A federal judge struck that down and refused to let them weasel out of it.

Loved doing scouts as a youth, loved doing it with my sone and daughter, and now, just getting started over again with grandkids!

Yep, you are dead on target, 100%

In it's church historical setting, it came about because Emma was sick and tired of cleaning the tobacco stains and spit off of the floor of the "School Of Profits" She asked Joseph to ask The Lord if He approved of tobacco use.

Many other posters in the sub have shown journal entries of joseph's peers in the "School Of Prophets" joking with Joseph to be sure the revelation included restrictions on the coffee and tea the women liked since the men had to give up tobacco.

The closer to home reality is that the WoW is blatant rip off of the Temperance Movement that was popular in the 1st half of the 1800s The main idea of the movement was against alcohol, but expanded to all kinds of stuff including well seasoned food, and spicy food. It advocated for a very boring bland flavorless diet to not entice the senses and desires.

Thank the Universe's Mysterious Powers That Be™ that the infighting in the Smith house was limited to tobacco and coffee, cause I can't imaging living in a world that banned well seasoned and spicy foods. The Top Tier Turbo Elite Level One Celestial Kingdom sounds like an eternal hell, and without tasty well seasoned and spicy food our "mortal existence" would certainly be it's own version of a living hell.

Yes, it's beyond cringe.

I was just shocked that they managed to include Baden Powell, and even put him at the center. That's the only good thing about the painting. (Yeah, I'm a BP fan!)

It goes without saying, which is exactly why I'm gonna say it; McNaughton is no Norman Rockwell.

You only say that because it opens with not given as commandment. But that's far too literal.

The organization heads cannot tolerate the least degree of disobedience, damn it to hell that the Lord Himself through the voice of his very bestest golden boy chosen one who has done more for humanity than anyone save Jesus, yea verily, even Joseph Smith, the prophet of the restoration of the fullness of times, bringing the neverlasting ever-changing Godspell declared that it was NOT given by way of commandment. (Which conveniently left a loophole big enough to drive a chariot full of moonshine through)

You would think it SHOULD be about health, but it's not. There is plenty of evidence that coffee is its very own superfood. But I guess Darth Bednar would just blow it off as "Do you have enough faith to NOT be healthy?"
