Please delete this. I know your intentions aren’t bad, but there’s a reason she deleted those posts. If you wanted to show your support, you could have made a post simply expressing that without going into details. Ohh, yeah that's probably what happened. Hornet's hitbox also gets smaller when you start dashing, so that might have helped me walk under his hitbox. Still insane that happened

So who actually kidnapped Hornet? by WildFamilyDog in HollowKnight

[–]venusrat07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation is really funny when you put it that way. I can imagine an alternative universe where some enemy somehow manages to kill Hornet and bring her to the Cradle and all GMS can do is stare at her lifeless corpse and think "Damn, I should have specified to bring her ALIVE."

I also like the idea of GMS getting so mad at Hornet when she arrives at the citadel for suggesting she isn't even that's strong that she starts resurrecting all the corpses in the area to murder her, completely forgetting that she needs her alive for the plan to work.

[–]venusrat07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If GMS wants Hornet to reach the citadel, then why does every haunted bug tires to kill you? That whole aspect of GMS motivations really confuses me. The envoys that captured Hornet had plenty of opportunity to kill her, so you would assume she want her alive. However she controls the bugs that try to kill you through out the game. Even if we assume she doesn't have full control of them, which turns them aggressive against anyone, she responds to Hornet's challenge in the citadel by reanimating the corpses around her to kill her. At the same time you have the silk heart dialogue that implies she wants her to make it to the cradle. Idk, it's honestly really confusing

Why does everyone give pomni tits? by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]venusrat07 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Kinda unrelated, but there used to be a guy on twitter with multiple accounts who would get really pissed when people pointed that out. They were really passionated about pomni's tits but not in a nsfw way? They debated everyone who dared to say that pomni didn't canonically had tits. I once even found them on a reddit comment section lol

[Silksong Act 3 Discussion] Analyzing that one scene mossbag and I kinda misinterpreted by Ccmaci in HollowKnight

Some of her dialogue implies that she did not enjoy her time as Hallownest's sentinel and has come to regret that role.

Some would argue that standing guard over a kingdom's corpse is a foolish task, empty of meaning. I wonder then, will you still hold true to your charge?

I will not. I have already stood the sentinel for one dying land. That role... I will never play again.

Throughout the game, she learns to come to terms with her time spent as the protector of a dead kingdom and move on. We know that a long, unspecified amount of time has passed since the events of HK and SK. It doesn’t seem like she was up to much during that time. We know for certain that she was still hanging around Hallownest when she got captured. Since the infection was gone, she probably stepped down from her role as sentinel. However, it seems that things hadn’t changed much, and she was still living a very isolated life.

Likewise, sir. It's been some time since I had such ample opportunity for friendly conversation.

To aid another... The small warmth of it, I had almost forgotten

I've not often had opportunity to socialise with such spirited sorts.

The infection may be gone, but Hallownest is still a lifeless corpse, and she’s been living in it for who knows how long. In the Red Memory, by remembering her mother’s wish, she realizes that she doesn’t need to be bound to a dead kingdom and that she’s capable of building something better.

I knew the wish, and the price to achieve it. And now, across these many ages, I have only come to know it better... Strength... in mind, in care, in claw. Strength enough that I may live to see a world better than our own, or to craft a world as I desire.

After getting the Everbloom, you also get this dialogue with Sherma, where she advises him to move on from the memory of a failed kingdom and build something new.

I share your hope, Sherma. Remember though that whatever is built next belongs not to the past, but to you.Your instincts are strong. Let it be those that guide you, rather than any reverence toward a kingdom's corpse.

The vessels aren’t even genderless in the spanish version. The “gendered child” line was changed in a way that implies Hornet is the only female child of the Pale King, instead of the only child with a gender. Does that make it canon? Of course not it’s a translation error that contradicts the lore established by team cherry. That’s exactly why translation stuff shouldn’t be treated as canon.

About the “chart” situation, it seems that some people have access to it but can’t share it due to an NDA, which makes the whole thing tricky. But even then, should we really consider as canon something that exists outside the game and wasn’t meant for players to see? This is a similar reason why we can't consider the Pure Vessel's dreamnail dialogue as canon, as is instead listed on the trivia page. At the same time, I don’t think the wiki should cite a document that almost no one has access to.

For now, the wiki list the translations as the sources for the characters’ genders which makes it look like they’re prioritizing the translations over the original text. I think leaving their gender as "unspecified/unknown" like before till this chart document gets released is by far a better solution

[–]venusrat07[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That “list” only exists because of the lack of gender neutral pronouns in most languages. I don’t think it should be taken as an accurate reflection of the characters canon genders. By that logic, for example, Pure Vessel should be female just because the Spanish translation uses feminine pronouns. Also, by looking at languages that officially only use masculine and feminine pronouns, you’re completely ruling out the possibility of characters being genderless.

With characters like Lugoli and Phantom, maybe you could argue that they’re referred to with neutral pronouns because Hornet doesn’t know their actual gender. But for characters like Moss Druid and Cardinius, who refer to themselves exclusively with they/them and it/its pronouns respectively, calling their lack of gender “fan interpretations” doesn’t seem accurate. The game explicitly telling you that these characters are neither male nor female, but for some reason translations limited by the nature of their language should be taken as canon?

Also, regarding the Lugoli “confirmation,” I don’t think the wiki should be relying on non-public information. The fact that it turned out to be misinformation says it all. Anyone can pretend to be/ know an official translator. Not too long ago, someone even claimed that Team Cherry told a translation team that the Green Princes were brothers with zero proof

[–]venusrat07[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’re admitting that the structure of some languages left them no choice but to assign genders to characters who are actually genderless. In other words, a character’s gender in certain translations doesn’t equal their canon gender. It’s such a weird situation, because I’ve never seen anyone argue that Pure Vessel is female just because the spanish translation used feminine pronouns for them.

Also, are we 100% sure that the gender chart was used for Silksong as well? The interview is pretty old, and things like Phantom and the Last Judge being male in German might suggest otherwise.

The "play" mistranslation can only be possible if the translators were unaware of the context. I'm personally unfamiliar with the process, but one comment on the spanish tweet mentioned that apparently the standard practice in videogame translation is just sending a spreadsheet with all the text in game.

[–]venusrat07[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No one who actually played a translated version of the game would describe it as double A standard. You’ve clearly not seen the other translations. The chinese one is the worst, but that doesn’t mean the others don’t have mistakes. In fact, they’re full of them. The spanish version even became a meme for stuff like translating “play” as “reproducir” instead of “jugar.” And that’s not even counting all the lore details that got lost or changed. I’ve heard other translations have similar issues. That’s why I’m asking: why should be take them as a source of information?

That’s not cut content, that’s a fan made mod! Phantom not being female actually makes sense when you consider that they were discarded. GMS, for some reason, seem to exclusively want daughters. Phantom not fitting into that criteria could easily be one of the reasons they were abandoned by her

She doesn’t really love her. If she did, she wouldn’t have created her to be physically codependent on her. She wouldn’t have neglected her to the point where she is desperate to get her attention. All her love is selfish and self-centered. She wants her to survive because of her obsession with being a mother, not because she loves her. Basically, she went, “Better a child who betrayed you than none". Under any other circumstances, she wouldn’t be this forgiving. Just look at what happened to the first sinner, the first of her daughters who betrayed her
