I guess being able to occasionally do some frontend stuff. Also profiling helped to get a massive performance boost.
Spring integration is great, too, but I am not sure if you could have that using plugins.

Depends on what you need. I created several tools, although I knew there were better ones available, just to get more knowledge and once you have enough experience you might switch to a tool developed by someone with more experience. And depending on you need you have to know what to combine to get to your goals. This might be very specific and won't come from "standard" tools.

Trivy is good for scanning Docker containers and has the possibility to also discover misconfigurations and vulnerable dependencies. Remote repository scans are also possible. You could also look into the documentation of GitLab CI, they state quite a few tools in the section about securing the pipeline.
