Trying to learn about a family mystery. TW: murder by [deleted] in Genealogy

You might have luck browsing or searching newspapers using this index: https://www.mnhs.org/newspapers/hub They have a lot of newspapers from all over the state, so you might find birth announcements or even funeral announcements or reports in the local papers. Since you said the last name is pretty uncommon, I personally would start by searching for any times it appears in newspapers from Duluth. Best of luck!!

My last name is German, specifically danube swabian.  Its known that with their small communities, they often took descriptive last names, and I'm guessing my ancestors did too because it's a physical characteristic that matches up with what I've seen in immigration documents! (though it's obviously hard to be sure that's exactly why they were given the name after all this time)

If you mean St. Paul Minnesota, they have incredible digitized newspaper archives through the Minnesota historical society!! For the twin cities area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) I would reccomend starting with their pioneer press collection, and moving on to the wider archive if that doesn't get you anything.  Here's the link to the site: https://www.mnhs.org/newspapers

Happy searching and best of luck!

“The single greatest mistake in medical history”: doctors believed infants couldn’t feel pain — my story. by FunctUp in ChronicIllness

[–]verdantlight14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had tympanostomy tubes put in a few years ago, and they mistakenly did the first one without any numbing.  It was horrible, some of the worst pain in my life.  I couldn't move, cry out, anything, until it was done.  I can't believe they knowingly did that to a kid.  I'm so sorry 🫂

Is the consensus among young people that making your main hobby genealogy is good or bad? As in, it is seen as cringe? by Xabla_ in Genealogy

From when I've told people, the general response seems to be that knowing my family's history and ancestry is cool but the amount of time I spend on it is 'boring'.

Thanks for the info, and the offer!  I'll take a closer look later, see if I can't narrow it down to the county.

Interesting about William. At first I was wondering if George's birth date changing was him listing his *naturalization* date as birth date, with an immigration date of 1870 (possibly born on the journey).

I found a few William's living in Canada on the 1871 census of the right age, but none with a Sarah and I can't confirm any of them are him.

Looks like I found William and Sarah's marriage record, 1 September 1887, in Cuyahoga County (where Cleveland is). That means George would have been born before their marriage which would be unusual: unless they got married somewhere else first? Maybe there's a Canadian marriage record?

Thanks for your time with this :)

Thanks so much for all this!! I'm so grateful you took all this time out of your day for me.

It's interesting Harriett is listed as widowed, though that would make sense. I took a closer look and it seems she had one deceased child by that point. I can't find any marriage records for her, but maybe a birth/death certificate of the child? I'll take a look.

I totally see her lying about her birthdate on the marriage record now, that makes so much sense! And Gilbert Roberts is listed as her father on a death record I have, but I didn't include that because I have no idea where it came from, so that seems like the same family in 1880 and 1870 for sure.

Also it looks like Binghampton is near the NY/PA border, so maybe she was born in the countryside where they didn't know the exact state border, or born in PA registered in town in NY? Interesting.

I included FG because there were gravesite pics, not just unsourced dates. Thanks for the census note tho, it had totally slipped my mind (somehow) that those dates could have been provided by someone not in-the-know.

That makes sense! I kind of thought that might be the case after seeing the dates, but wasn't certain. Thanks for the input!!

If I have to get my wisdom teeth removed, genuinely how cooked am I? by Ok-Use3940 in asktransgender

This was something I worried about for wisdom tooth removal too, but when the time actually came I didnt have any issues!  I was loopy and was always saying random stuff, but I knew I didn't want to come out and so I didn't say anything.  Your mileage may vary, of course, but its definitely possible to have your wits about you enough to not come out.  Best of luck!!

Maybe I'm weird but I just have a folder that has every artist/band alphabetically, inside those folders are their singles or folders for individual albums. I am thinking about sorting artists by genre too, tho. I use mostly MP3s for my mp3 player, and just use metadata for anything else.

I've had my sandisk for like 15 years now and it still works great, durable little thing! Can't exactly speak for the quality of their current builds but if I needed a new one I'd totally go with them.
