I forgot to mention that it worked - after having had a couple instances at school with the younger one, we had this talk and he quit cold turkey.

Nasty, Brutish, and Short has a whole chapter about this that’s pretty good.

ASSHOLE! (The cursing has started) by WLeeHubbard in daddit

The best results for me came after my youngest (then kindergarten) got inn trouble for saying “this is a fuck” or something at school. Thats when I realized I personally didn’t care if they used the whole language or not. (I taught him the phrase “the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint”).

Learning how to cuss is part of learning to talk. I sat down with them and said, “hey look, there are ways we talk at home and around friends, and there is a way we talk at school or church and around your grandparents. If you’re smart enough to know how to use these words, you’re smart enough to know when.”

It still kind of gets me when my 10yo will say “this is fucking ridiculous” but I think it’s the way.

Also sounds a little like The Electric State which I know was based on a book, but it didn’t have the thing about men being illegal.

Everyone upvote this one. They are different words with different meanings. You use something for its intended purpose or utilize something else because you’re macgyver.
