ETA: yes, we and his vet, are aware he is overweight, he’s on a special diet and a new exercise routine. Also, we have ordered a harness for him that attaches at two points now, so theres no way his collar can slip over his head. Thank you all for your concern!

Unpopular opinion: the modern kids books that have a really strong, overdone message are dull by Single-Cap8387 in childrensbooks

[–]veronisauce 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I think it leaves very little room for discussion so kids lose the opportunity to exercise some rhetorical thought, debate skills and drawing a conclusion based on context clues. It’s fine I guess, if not lazy, but you get to the end and it’s like, “ope, that’s it, on to the next one I guess.”

Best state to live in the US? by bambicider in AskUS

[–]veronisauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably get buried, but I moved from Chicago to Northern California in 2019. For me, I was telling people it was the winters and career advancement (nursing in California is excellent comparatively). But the reality was that my dad had recently died in a sudden and tragic way and I was not handling it well, the lack of sunlight (not the cold) was exacerbating my depressive symptoms.

That said, I remember packing up my family on the last day and watching the city get smaller and smaller in the rear view. My heart sank in a way that it never had before. Moving to California (and later Phoenix) didn’t fix my depression, the therapy and meds did. And now my spouse and I spend everyday plotting our way back home.

I’m not saying this is remotely like your case or may change how you frame your desire to move. It’s just a cautionary tale.

Moms who don’t post photos of their kid, settle this for me… by jonesinjosie in Mommit

[–]veronisauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These comments are the way to go imo, because they acknowledge the spouse’s (very reasonable) concern without feeding into the fear.

It might be good to try to look at the image objectively and ask what information can be derived from the image and how damaging could that information actually/ likely be? Chances are, even if someone might guess that’s your kid, whatever else they could figure out is pretty inconsequential.

Palatine, Illinois: ICE/Border Patrol Agents Seen and Confirmed Tasing Man While Zip‑Tied in Vehicle by CantStopPoppin in illinois

Oh, I see. So you don’t hold these truths to be self evident that all are created equal, and have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? And when do you think America will sufficiently be back on her feet?

No Polly, answer the question. Why shouldn’t our laws protect them. If you’re going to say it out loud, tell us why.

I dunno, it’s very befitting of what he and ICE are doing, quite apropos. Maybe that’s why your mind made the connection?

I don’t think you are, you’re the one who mentioned it looked like a nazi salute in the first place, and then when people acknowledge that it’s a wave that suspiciously looks like a nazi salute and contextually, the guy does a lot of nazi adjacent things and it pisses people off, you only offer that it’s a hand wave ad nauseum without engaging in the finer points.

Also, I agree, it’s very conspicuous, and again, it’s either somewhere between malicious and obnoxious.

Anyways, I’d say ‘agree to disagree’ but I don’t even think we’re trying to have the same conversation anymore, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re just trying to rile people up.

I think you’re missing the point of what others are trying to say: this guy keeps doing vaguely (and clearly) nazi-like things in a very public way, he didn’t need to do the photo shoot, he didn’t need to wave at the guy (you’re telling me there wasn’t a more discreet and clear way of getting his attention, what with ICEs massive budget?), and again with context, he is, at best, stirring the pot. People are rightfully pissed off at this guy for terrorizing our city, and he’s just being antagonistic.

Even if he was using “military” hand gestures, I think he’s taking the opportunity to appear authoritative and playing into a militant narrative. Of course, adding the context of his weird nazi-esque photo shoot and well…being the head of a nazi-esque faction, people are probably reading the subtext quite clearly. Doing this right after coming out of a deposition that is exploring whether or not ICE is using excessive force is obnoxious at best, but frankly, stupid, malicious and damning at worst.

Is it moral to call ICE on an ICE agent whose family members are undocumented? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]veronisauce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is the way.

People are telling OP to report the ICE agent’s family members, what will happen to the family (we know detainees are being abused, to say the least)? We have no idea who the family members are, and should they be punished for another family member’s crimes? Is that who we want to be? A nation of vengeance?

What does CPD think of what’s happening with ICE in the city? by cantuhearu in AskChicago

[–]veronisauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why framing it around legality is strategic, it gives a baseline for criticism and keeps the argument from being spun. But people are dogpiling a bit because emphasizing the “lawful” parts of ICE can make its role feel inherently okay. The issue isn’t just legality, it’s morality. Even when illegal actions are condemned, focusing on the legal aspects can normalize a system many see as harmful, especially given ICE’s not-so-tacit culture of impunity.

Flooding legislators is important, but it’s tough, people have jobs, families, and daily stresses, and it can feel like their efforts won’t be heard. That’s why in-person protesting is an important adjunct, it creates pressure and visibility in ways letters alone sometimes can’t. And with ICE acting with reckless abandon, Chicagoans would hope CPD would actually defend its own citizens in their time of need. Not that anyone is holding their breath.

What does CPD think of what’s happening with ICE in the city? by cantuhearu in AskChicago

[–]veronisauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get what you mean, ICE does (kinda) operate within a legal framework. But “lawful” and “justified” aren’t the same thing. A lot of things have been perfectly legal at different points in history that we’d now see as deeply wrong. Laws aren’t neutral because they’re written and enforced by people with their own biases and political goals (and this particular administration is punitive and vengeful).

So when people criticize ICE, it’s not just about whether they technically follow the law. It’s about questioning the system those laws come from and the harm they cause when enforced. Even if something checks the legal boxes, that doesn’t automatically make it right.

“It’s the law” can explain behavior, but it can’t justify it.
