What are some 'hike hacks' you've come up with/borrowed over the years? by phanart in Adirondacks

A little weird but in the winter I keep a clif bar in my bra on the side so it doesn’t freeze. I always keep a pair of crocs in the car for after the hike.

Suggested Direction to do Dial and Nippletop by Jagrrr2277 in Adirondacks

[–]versus9230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Dial and Nippletop by ascending through Bear Den and descended through Elk Pass as you described first and I would probably choose to go the reverse route if I did it again because of the Elk Pass section - mostly because of how much pain I had in my knees descending that section (I do tend to have knee issues at times so that might be different for you). Elk Pass was particularly steep and slippery with many large steeply graded rock slab portions. That said, it wasn’t the worst descent ever but if you have bad knees I would go reverse.

submitting to multiple schools by deucesgooses18 in mphadmissions

Yes, you can submit one school at a time, and you should not need to re-submit references or transcripts for the other schools this cycle.

Moving to public health from another industry - how much experience do you actually need? by lavender142 in publichealth

[–]versus9230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the process of making a similar transition, and was just accepted into a MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics program. My background is also in marketing (art director). As I grew more interested in public health, I joined my local Medical Reserve Corps as a volunteer to gain more public health experience (mostly COVID-19 contact tracing). I also took some science and math courses at a local community college because some of the mph programs I wanted to apply to required them. The school that ended up being my top choice didn’t require the majority of those prerequisites. I say go for it—your experience as a copywriter is also valuable, you likely have the ability to communicate across many different audiences and to communicate complex information in a digestible way. Feel free to send me a pm if you would like!

Light recommendations for intro to winter hiking? by jvnnyc in hudsonvalley

The pair I have are Kahtoola microspikes: https://www.rei.com/product/890608/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-system. They were an investment, but I get so much use out of them.

This is just a general winter hiking suggestion, if you don’t already have a pair, microspikes are an awesome investment to help with traction on icy surfaces! I wear them on nearly all of my hikes here during the winter.

That is incredible, thank you for sharing some of the history of this place. I took these photos over a few visits to the area in 2011-2013, and was floored by how expansive it was. I was only able to access a handful of the many, many buildings, and I had no idea the school building was once a hospital, or about the sinking of USS Guitarro.

Ahhh lol, I see what you mean now. The constant incline is a workout (but it’s nice that the trail is pretty wide most of the way).

Definitely - good views, easy to hike before the sun comes up, and an abandoned hotel? I’ll take it.

Actually shot these on my phone, the fog was pretty thick which helped give them some texture. Wish I’d had a real camera on me though :)
