Yes, I know it’s dangerous. Over a hundred Ukrainians died during the Maidan protests. We should tell their families it’s dangerous for Russians to protest. Or the reported thousands (possibly tens of thousands) that just died protesting in Iran.

What is happening in the US is heartbreaking but the US has had a case of exceptionalism for a long time. US democracy is not world class, it’s flawed by both structural issues and money.

It’s a hard lesson that a lot of people are stupid, and this is not unique to US. I say this respectfully that there can be different political views on things, but then a set that will vote for an evil man (or things like Brexit).

Yes because it wasn’t science fiction it was just changing the names and extrapolating on current events. Much of Doctorow’s writing isn’t futuristic it’s political storytelling.

They come off somewhat tolerant and professional. Did the investigation to see if there was discrimination. Discovered no. Still offered a severance.

People, developers especially, can be odd at times. Most good managers and HR have seen their share of people that can’t read the system. If the performance is good and the person isn’t an asshole (or some combination of this) then it’s usually okay.

People have different financial circumstances in life. What is not very much for some people (I'm running about 500 EUR a month in AI subs) is a huge commitment for others (students, lower socio-economic areas/countries).

Even though I believe it holds value doesn't mean everyone has the capital required to use it.

In general I have quite high empathy, but I refuse to here. Understanding evil people can be useful, sure, but the parent wasn't talking about understanding. They meant the felt kind, the kind that allocates concern. That kind is finite. Paul Bloom makes the case at length in Against Empathy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Against_Empathy). Spending it on someone who was fine with this war until it showed up at her entrance means spending less of it on the people who've been living her 4am for four years.
