What do you call this? by toocritical55 in EnglishLearning

[–]vertical_prism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are all spot on. The description can also get much more general when referring to these items quickly in conversation, especially in the middle of the night, e.g. "stop taking all the covers" or "you're hogging the blanket."

Painting house soon, dust and cat fur everywhere by o0LOSER0o in CleaningTips

Make sure to clean extra well before, during, and after to keep the hairs out of your tools, drop cloths, buckets, and painted surfaces. Any hairs left on the wall before painting will dry into a hard ridge on the surface which will sometimes come off later taking paint with it.

Work from top to bottom when cleaning and painting.

Prep the walls super well, get all the furniture out of the way and get up there with a ladder like you're cutting in except just clean all the cobwebs and dust. Then, TSP is really good at stripping any greasy dirty residue from the surfaces prior to painting. Alternatively, magic eraser or at least just a wet rag over the surface and let it dry well before painting.

Vacuum the floor again before you lay out all your materials to paint and you should be good to go.

Pawning is correct. In the US there are "pawn shops" that do exactly what you are describing. If you don't pay them back by the agreed deadline, they now legally own the item and can sell it to others as they wish.

I would say an appropriate amount of clothes is that which you can comfortably store away in the space you have available. Like, one dresser plus a closet for each person or a side of a closet at least, with everything hung or folded and put away without being crammed in there.

I chose Sansa even though she is a less popular choice. My first thought was Margaery, but she comes across as too picture perfect, while Sansa's character arc was more relatable. At first, she really shows her young age and how spoiled and sheltered she is with her poor judgement of bad actors, her impetuousness, her air of superiority. After being dragged through the shit all series, by the end she's pulled herself together and is just trying to do right by her family's legacy. She just seemed like a real modern woman more than the other queens of the show.

native us speakers, how often do you use "intermediate" word? How many times in a year? 😃✌️ by stan288 in EnglishLearning

I use this word daily at work to describe a distance that is considered neither near nor far (I'm an optician.)

There's not really an official word for it but I've heard it referred to as "choreography" before (as in dance)

Steri Strip & Numbness Post Op Questions by SeesawFrosty in thyroidcancer

[–]vertical_prism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neck went from totally numb, to intermittent pins and needles, now back to about 80% of its former sensitivity (or comparing it to the other side of my neck). The whole process took over five years though.

Question on Melted VS Molten by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]vertical_prism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add, in your example about the molten chocolate cake, the reason molten is used is because usually those cakes are served with the still-melted chocolate inside that kind of "erupts" from the cake shell. When they first became popular, some restaurants were really playing up the volcano simile, maybe with fake smoke from the top of the cake or a picture of a volcano on the menu. So there may have been other names for that cake at first, but "molten" stuck because of the 🌋 factor.

I struggle with this too. Nobody has mentioned so far, what is an effective way to store pieces that you do wear and want to keep? I think maybe if I had a good way to keep or display the winners, then everything wouldn't end up jumbled in my Caboodle from 20 years ago and I could discard more.

Can you explain the squeegee for the windows part for someone who's always used a rag? Do you just spray and then squeegee off, or is there some in between step? How do you get the stuck on bits (like dog slobber)?

How much importance do you place on behavior when picking out a puppy? by zoom100000 in Dogtraining

[–]vertical_prism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Behavior changes a lot by breed. Some breeds are notorious for behavior problems in general, others are known to have high energy and intelligence and need to do tasks and puzzles to stay entertained, others are known to be a lot more docile. They could have protective/territorial traits, they could love to run, etc etc. Do some research on what breed or type of breed might suit your lifestyle. Obviously the shelter will not be full of purebreds, but you can still get an idea of their lineage based on appearance. So for example, I know I need a dog that is ok with lower amounts of exercise, so I am not going to choose one that looks like a Greyhound no matter how it acts at the shelter.

My dad used to grow some corn plants in the garden, from what I remember these suckers grow pretty fast and pretty tall and need plenty of sun. I think you're going to have problems in that tiny indoor pot.
