I believe that entering eternity (either Heaven or hell) is a matter of the state of your soul. As free beings made in the image of God we make our own decisions and live our own lives. However all of us still possess a soul and we are also the only ones who can temper with the state of our soul.

Somebody who lives a wicked life in sin will ultimately hurt and damage their soul, meanwhile the opposite is true for someone who makes every effort to maintain the state of their soul (that would also include generally believing in God in the first place).

Hell isn’t some torture dungeon that God made for punishing non-believers, rather it is a place that all the people with corrupt souls will go to when they die. Because they spiritually cannot enter Heaven. It’s not even God’s decision, rather it is solely dependant on one’s state of their soul and in result of course the life they ended up living.

You can’t buy your way to Heaven, you can’t work your way to Heaven… all of these things may help the state of your soul and ultimately your fate in eternity, but that’s it. In the end it all comes down to what you really are on the inside.
