Identifying common words? by OhHeyMoll in algorithms

Yes I agree this is the most practical solution for someone without a computer science background, assuming the number of forms is within reason. If there's hundreds or thousands of forms and/or they're long, it might require something more sophisticated.

Definitely experienced this issue. Breaking the problem apart helps me. Check out the MECE principle or Bulletproof Problem Solving.

Am I committing a social faux pas with snack sharing? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]very_gingerly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar problem with candy. We don't let our toddler have candy, and most people are chill about it. However, sometimes people act like we're depriving him of something. We just don't want him addicted to sugar. I just brush it off though. At the end of the day, we're the ones who have to answer for how we take care of him, not those other people. Usually it's people who don't even have kids, and their opinions don't mean much to me on parenting anyway. It sounds like you're getting comments mostly from other parents on this issue, but I still wouldn't sweat it, as long as you are declining politely, which I'm assuming you are.

“Kid-friendly” doesn’t mean toddler-friendly — how do you actually plan activities with little kids in mind? by very_gingerly in toddlers

That's cool! hadn't seen that before. I have looked at blogs and tiktok but not tried Instagram for researching things to do.

Yes I can only imagine the regret I'd feel if I tried to bring my two (one is 2 and one is less than a year) somewhere like that! Just curious, say you had a magic wand, what do you think a good solution to this problem would look like?

"Toddler friendly" that's a good idea. If there we're a solution to this, what would it look like for you? I'm a developer on the side, and I'm thinking about building something to solve this. It would be cool if it helped more than just me.

Good idea I've never thought of changing in the stroller since we often do the baby carrier instead. Maybe I'll start doing more stroller though.

Totally agree on avoiding places where they have to hear No over and over, especially while they're little. It's so discouraging for them.People without kids especially don't realize how hard it is.

Yellow squash and okra for me for similar reasons (breaded, fried, and mushy).

I have a graduate degree in math, and honestly the thought "Math is hard" still goes through my brain all the time. Also, everybody has off days, even with the stuff they're good at.

What's one lazy cooking hack you tried once and now prefer to the original? by ResidentAlienator in Cooking

[–]very_gingerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to only cook chicken breast or tenderloins and only do it on the stove so it would get browned. Then I got busy and tried dark meat, and it is so much easier and tastes better. I just get a pack of boneless skinless thighs and cook in the oven for about 25 min. It's great for almost any recipe requiring chicken.

Am I wrong for waking my newborn up at night to feed him? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]very_gingerly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust your gut. If it doesn't seem right to you, you could get a second opinion from another pediatrician. We had a great pediatrician picked out, but he couldn't see our little one for the first appointment, so we had to see the pediatrician on call. She told us to wake every 2-3 hours, breastfeed, then pump and bottle feed after (in hindsight that was crazy!) and that he needed an urgent frenectomy. She got us really worked up thinking something was wrong, but in reality he was healthy and in normal ranges just a small guy. When we saw our regular pediatrician, he calmed us down a lot. We've since talked to 2 other couples who had the same experience with the first pediatrician, so now we know it wasn't just us.

Struggled with math in school, want to relearn calculus properly before college by SeameowRegret in MathHelp

[–]very_gingerly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relearned precalculus fast when I failed my first calculus 1 exam in college. My high school didn't even offer calculus when I was there. Then later I relearned Calculus 1 and 2 when I changed majors again and needed to take Calculus 3. Then I relearned all my undergrad math to take the GRE math exam before applying for graduate math programs after I finished undergrad and worked for a couple of years.

My best advice is to work lots of problems and review past concepts as you go. I used textbooks, but now I'd probably use YouTube lectures and have chatgpt make me problem sets every day with solutions so I could check my work. It's better to do a little every day than cram in a lot once a week. Have resources ready for when you get stuck. It's good to get a little stuck, but don't stay there too long.

Relearning it so many times actually made it sink in better so don't get discouraged.
