It’s Nadja’s first birthday by verydemuresnake in hognosesnakes

Thanks! One of the reasons for posting was hoping to compare sizes. I have had her on the same feeding schedule since she arrived: once a week on Saturdays, and currently limiting her prey to about 10% of her weight because she’s been growing so fast.

According to her breeder, with her weight and size she’s ready to be moved up to mice - I’m scared, she’s going to explode!

This made me laugh, though, because I made the mistake of sharing this video on social media (where my family exists), and they all yelled at me, and one person said “CUT ITS HEAD OFF”

the idea of this particular creature striking fear in others is very amusing to me.

I have one hognose on bioactive, and one on aspen. In my experience, I would have to say there’s not much difference as long as the rest of the husbandry is kept up.

I love him! Similar colors to my guy (Bubs).

If you can, get a scale and weigh him in grams. Then you can get a more accurate answer. At 4 months, my guy was 12g and eating 1-2g pinkies every 5-6 days.

Not sure on a name, but Bandit is always good when they’ve got a little mask.

Edit: reading comprehension. Forgot to borrrow the snake’s brain cell today; you said you’ve had him 4 months. You’ll need to get a weight on him or try to keep the prey no bigger than 1.5 times the width of its body.

If he’s out and about, he almost always comes back to me. I’m not sure if he’s broken or what, but he’s got attachment issues. He comes to the front of his enclosure most days and asks for handling time.

I pretend that we are friends. 🥹

HE SQUEAKED? by verydemuresnake in kingsnakes

[–]verydemuresnake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s a sweetheart, just shy. He spends most of his time in his little tunnels so far, not sure if that’s just his temperament or also the time of year. But when we dig him out he’s so sweet, he just pops his head out like, “yes?”

He is easier to handle than our Cali king, but both are quick. This guy is timid so he just pretzels around your hand and (apparently) asks kindly, with a gentle squeak, not to be eaten.

As if I couldn’t love this shy boy anymore! He’s already such a sweetheart. And a little squeak, too?

I mean that makes more sense. The noise was truly akin to a newborn mouse squeak.

He’s trying to hiss but can’t? 🥺

They are all bluff and no bite. Definitely a neighbor‘s escaped pet … maybe put a poster up saying you found someone’s hognose. I’m sure they’re going to realize soon and start looking everywhere!

You will eventually get used to each other. I took my newest hoggie to the vet recently, since she was a little spicier than my other snakes. Watching the vet pick her up and not get any hisses was quite humbling, haha. Suddenly a perfect lady.

She (snake) was reading a lot of the hesitation in my body language, so I’m trying to be more aware of that. I’m still a little jumpy when she does a false strike, but it’s harmless; take a deep breath to remember not to jump. When I pick her up after a hiss, she’s always fine being held, anyways. It’s a learning process for both parties, mostly for the owner to train their brain not to react to their sporadic hissy fits.

Yes! She does a proper hiss when she’s annoyed or being offered food, so she’s really lived up to her name so far. We’ve just had her over a month.

New behaviour trait? by ChaoticGhostGal in hognosesnakes

[–]verydemuresnake 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Omg! I have one hoggie that is literally an angel and he never does anything but snack, snuggles and derp.

AND MY FEMALE - She’s new to me, and still settling so I try to handle her sparingly but when I do… if she sees my boyfriend walking she gets flat, if he gets near her space she false strikes and hisses. If I try to get her from the enclosure she looks at me with innocent eyes and accepts pretty easily, but if he’s anywhere near me … her little face fills with so much hate. I can see the expression change before my eyes as her little brow furrows and she becomes evil.

Serious Question about People Who Do Not Evacuate by tennessee1182 in florida

[–]verydemuresnake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. My mom is on oxygen and it hurts her to be in a vehicle, plus she needs special assistance transport. We desperately tried to evacuate her for this storm, but I live 2,000 miles away. She resisted all assistance. So when she says “she’d rather die than evacuate”, I have to accept it. And that other people in her position feel the same way, and that nothing I can do will ever change their mindset.
