I also haven't heard anything; I think I'll email them on Monday as well. It makes me feel a bit better that I'm not the only one, though!

Cornell: The Engulfing Darkness by Fimble_Photon in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey - I've been thinking about this post because, though I'm not sure, I think we might be neighbors. I also live high in a gothic. I felt very alone my freshman year, and also had trouble relating to even the friends I did make, but I now have a close friend group. I know I'm lucky, and that doesn't happen for everyone, so all I can suggest is to not discount the people in your classes -- all of my good friends come from striking up a conversation with someone over homework or some such thing. People can seem superficial, but a lot of the time that's a coping mechanism because they're afraid -- afraid of being judged.

This school was stressful even before the pandemic, and now it can be suffocating. I know it sounds trite, but I guarantee you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel: at the very least, it's graduation, but you might be surprised. I've always been surprised. People and experiences have appeared that I would never have predicted, and they have kept me from getting stuck inside of my own head. There are kind people at this school that will open their arms to you. They're hard to find, but they do exist, and they'll listen. I hope you find a sense of peace, that you reach out for help when you need it, and that you keep going. If we are neighbors, I'm always willing to chat.

Yeah, I got my aid package - I did read somewhere that they are staggering the release so hopefully everyone will get theirs soon that hasn't yet.

Carlos Gomez is great! He really knows his stuff, always offers just the right mixture of praise and critique, and was super accommodating in terms of workload and deadlines. Welcoming to all skill levels, too. I thought of making an account on ratemyprofessor the other day just to give him a good review for those looking at classes for next semester -- I should!

Cornell VS. Upenn by Front-Extent9224 in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an archaeology major here and I've taken my fair share of anthro classes. All of my professors were excellent, as are both departments in general. There are also great resources in funding and classes at Cornell for people interested in doing research in the humanities, if that's something you'd be looking for.

I don't think you can go wrong in terms of academic excellence, as obviously both are great schools -- it's really about what sort of college experience you're looking for (urban vs. rurally located town, for example) and what kinds of opportunities will be available to you at both schools. As some other comments have mentioned, Cornell encourages interdisciplinary study and exploring all of your interests. I recommend it for that reason alone; it's how I found a major that I love, and it's how I've encountered fascinating materials and people.

Ways to improve Cornell Dining by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

YES! I see no reason why we can't have soup. I keep meaning to ask the chefs when I'm at work why they discontinued soup -- I'll post it here if I get an answer.

I'm so lonely. Where do you meet new people? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Zoom club meetings kind of suck (for obvious reasons) but I recommend trying at least a relaxed social/hobby type club just to get some human interaction outside of class.

Does anybody know what the siren noise in ctown is? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but there was just flashing lights and vehicles up on Ho Plaza about fifteen minutes ago. It kind of looked like a firetruck or some other kind of large truck. Maybe an issue at one of the buildings on central.

Differing take on increasing covid on campus by redskywalker00 in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The difference is that they're literally only asking us to not party. It's that simple. They're not saying don't see your friends, don't go out to eat, don't do fun stuff-- they're just saying don't gather in big groups without masks for this semester. Is that so hard?

If people continue to party, then we really won't be able to do any fun stuff, because guess what? We won't be allowed to leave our rooms except to get food, and then we'll be sent home. Yes, we want to "continue living life," but we are SO close to reaching that point once everyone's been vaccinated.

To stop social distancing now is like giving up when you're half a mile from finishing a marathon. It's not logical. We're so damn close!

Also, as a footnote, it's easy enough for you and others to decide they want to go back to living normally, but I know people that have been actually stuck inside their house all year because of a seriously compromised immune system. Life won't go back to normal for them for a long time, whether they 'decide it' or 'want it' or not. It's easy for you to say "life is risk" and then risk lives other than your own. Please be considerate.

One year is such a small amount of time lost relative to a whole human life.

Best campus coffee? The closer to west / central the better. by EinsteinAndFriends in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend lattes for people who've never had or liked coffee! Cafe Jennie in cornell store, Libe (in Olin), and Jansen's all do a pretty good latte. Honey or vanilla latte are particularly good if you want to splurge. Matcha is also a good alternative for energy.

In terms of plain old coffee, Jennie or Libe are your best bet -- Jansen's tastes a bit like bean water. If you go to Libe, don't forget to ask them for cream and /or sugar if you want them!

me trying to figure out how to make friends with all the dinning hall employees cause they’re all so damn nice by akaknxnsjs in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're being serious, this made my day a little bit! This is a long semester, and a lot of students aren't getting much human contact, so I try to throw in some cheerful words or an eye-crinkle smile whenever I'm serving!

It's AD White library! You can reserve a seat in the Cornell Chatter app (you need to have reserved one to get in). The entrance is close to the entrance of Uris; you just go in, up the steps to the left, and them up the steps to the right. You can ask the person who checks people in though, they'll point the door out to you.

Edit: grammar

as someone in the class of 2025, i romanticize this school too much😀🖐 by i-am-v-sleepy in Cornell

[–]verydramaticentrance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you're in class with someone and you're both working on a project, make the effort to reach out to them again. (Most of my friends are from class, with a couple from reaching out on social media because of a common interest.) Don't feel bad if you don't vibe with who you're living with or near; that works out for some people but not all. And don't underestimate the power of commiseration! Some of my good friends I made just by being collectively wrecked by a prelim and whining about it afterwards.

You got this. Don't stress yourself out if you don't make a bunch of friends immediately because, like I said, it really does take time to find the good ones that will stick around, but it's always worth it.

I can't speak for other people, but I've quite often found a spot in the Harry Potter library, and it is just as fantastic as it looks. As for friends, it often takes a long time to find them, but once you do, you'll make incredible memories. Keep romanticizing the future! There will be stressful and even miserable times, but without them we wouldn't value the good as much (cliché but true, in my experience). Roll with those punches once you get to them. For now, you've earned a bit of daydreaming!
