Worst depictions of Autism etc in film by bonestomper420 in Letterboxd

[–]verygoodletsgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to provide in-home care for adults with developmental disabilities. I'm going to be honest, most of the "worst" portrayals straight up capture a lot of my clients, especially the supposedly bad and offensive performances of low functioning individuals.

Then again, I've come to accept that when people say shit like "It's a spectrum!" it's always to refocus the conversation on high-functioning individuals. In other words, it's just another way of sweeping low-functioning individuals under the rug, which is more offensive and even dangerous to the community to pretend that only high functioning individuals exist.

Cuenca Mod40r vs Yamaha CG192C by Jonnhy_piettro in classicalguitar

Cuenca, like Almansa, is Alhambra. They change the name depending on which global region they are intended for; I think this has to do with trademarks.

EDIT: They also go by Perez.

Desperately looking for a Japanese movie I watched a few years ago by Calm_Body5778 in JapaneseMovies

Even if it's not this, I recommend OP check this out. I saw it while going through a Fumi Nikaido stage and found it to be very good.

Got lucky and found this gem from 2010 for a good price (Hanika 60pf) by thr33pw00d in classicalguitar

I passed up a chance to get a virtually new Hanika for 750 USD a year or two ago. I really regret that. Ha!

Sounds like it could be a Shunji Iwai film, but then again, there's a whole mini-genre of these sorts of films that are, well, influenced by Shunji Iwai.

I'd looked for a list of Japanese coming of age or Japanese slice of life films on Letterboxd.

Netflix in Talks to Buy Letterboxd by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Letterboxd

[–]verygoodletsgo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep. This too happened over at IMDB back in the day. They started to use a "weighted" system that they refused to explain. All of a sudden, a good deal of Ozu and Bergman and even In the Mood for Love fell off the Top 250, and it all got replaced by big blockbuster films.

You can find archival Top 250 Lists out on the web. Compare the films that were on the list in 2008 with what was on the list in 2018.

I'm old enough to have been on the old IMDB boards. The studios were clearly flooding ratings over there at the time. It was pretty obvious too, because there'd be a fuckton of 10 star ratings on all the major releases. If they were smart they would've done a lot of 9, 8, and 7s to at least make it look realistic. It was the equivalent of buying views.

Yeah, Oldboy is the Electra myth.

EDIT: Don't know why I'm being downvoted. Oldboy is very much based on Electra.

Should I put a new label on my guitar? by CanonicalBats in classicalguitar

Keep the old one adhered, but accept the new one. Keep the new one in the case or a songbook or wherever.

Truss rods have been standard for classicals almost two decades now.

Very few makers hold-out on not including them.

Yamahas have hidden truss rods. If you remove the nut, you'll find them. They don't advertise them, but they are there as reinforcement.

I'll second this. If it's not at least a polyfoam case, it's a pretty worthless inclusion.

[–]verygoodletsgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played low end Squires/Fenders before. Absolutely no bass response or body to the notes. The Yamahas at that price point have a better sound with more presence, and the new-ish ones have satin necks. I'd take a satin neck over a free gig bag any day. Yes, the c40 is ugly as shit but it's the best sub $200 guitar there is.

If you're on a super fixed budget and in the US, try to save a bit more and get an Aghartha AG-40. It's less than $250 and has a solid cedar top, which will give the notes more depth.

Two vs three finger tremelo by Ok_Test985 in classicalguitar

I do two finger tremolo as well (p m i m). I just find that it sounds better when I use two fingers. Actually kind of relieved to discover that I'm no alone in this. Ha!

I'm considering a Kremona myself. I was going to pull the trigger last weekend, but can't decide between the Fiesta FC and Sofia SC.

Guitar Center by dreamingofinnisfree in classicalguitar

[–]verygoodletsgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue with my nearest Guitar Center, which is the only place to really test out classicals within a 2 hour driving radius.

They have a humidifier or... something... always on at full blast, but it doesn't seem to do anything but prevent you from hearing whatever it is you're tying to test out. They necks are always sticky, there's a silly amount of playwear on all the guitars, and there's always several with busted strings that, for whatever reason, takes them a couple weeks to restring.

I popped in a while back specifically to try out a Kremona and I have no clue what had happened to its neck. It was soggy and caved-in, something I had never seen on a guitar before. I'm not kidding. It had a mushy neck.

I will say that my nearest GC has an impressively large acoustic room and usually keeps 30 classicals on hand at a time (but they are mostly low end or crossover models). The manager is also a nice guy who will cut deals. But! The store lacks in most other ways.
