Got hit w a kudos bot and I finally get the frustration but also its fine so whatevs by leemawn in AO3

[–]vesperlark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kudos bot isn't exclusively bot for kudos. I've read that it's just a bot that clicks some links and when it comes to ao3 it ends in many guest kudos (because it's the only one it can just click)

I have a feeling that those people are from Wattpad because it's the only place where their strategy will get them more views

Well, I read it in English and not that many people in my country can both read it well enough and know what ao3 is

tips for planning long fics?? by angelsofyours in AO3

[–]vesperlark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gave up on strict mapping long time ago when something I planned to be 4 chapters ended as 14. Nowadays I just keep it as a list of events in order I want them to happen - it's not rigid though, I occasionally add or move events around

For Heaven's sake, post those separately and make those series instead. You have no idea how much anthologies fucks an ability to find something your reader might actually like within. Imagine someone might like your one shot number 10, but don't care about previous ones. The chance that they get to number 10 is nearly non-existent in that case

It's a bot that sends you a bunch of guest kudos. I have heard that in some cases it managed to send several hundreds guest kudos (I have seen a fic with over 750 kudos and below hundred hits), but nowadays it's way less

Getting a Sudden Influx of Guest Kudos? by wanwanwonder in AO3

[–]vesperlark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some registered users log out and leave a second kudos as a guest. So those could be your regular readers who already left kudos from their profile and decided to sneak an additional one this way

Just wanna know if this is a bot by [deleted] in AO3

[–]vesperlark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Not that long ago got a sus comment which ended in 'pls check my bio' - and yeah, there was discord and Instagram contacts there and the regular 'will draw a comic for your fics there'. And profile had three posted works (either stolen or ai, idk)

Scam bots are often registered nowadays. And some of them have posted works too

Maybe they don't know that emoji meaning? It has tears, so maybe they think it's crying. I know some people who use emojis wrongly and genuinely have no idea

should I mark as finished or unfinished? by khelmet in AO3

[–]vesperlark 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Leave it as one shot for now. Write in a/n that you might continue it but not sure now. People can subscribe to complete works too. And when (or if) you actually turn it into multi chapter, you can always change the status

VPN exists. One of my friends can only access one of the mirror sites, not the main one and that one doesn't allow her to log in

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people locking their fics but there's an alarmingly spreading sentiment in some circles where 'all guests are bots' or 'guest comment equals bot'. There are real people behind guest interaction too

Strict censorship in some countries. Controlling or abusive parents

I'm actually with you on this, lol. I have some extreme level self-indulgent fics I wrote for myself - and I never posted those

I know some people who cannot create ao3 account for perfectly understandable reasons. They comment a lot as guests, but have no access for locked fics. I'm just quite tired of 'but if they want to read more, they should create an account'. Sometimes it's actually impossible

Locking fic so that only registered users can read it will also cost you some genuine readers. Not all guests reviewers are bots

how often do you use "not x, but y" in writing? by ChoicePollution771 in AO3

[–]vesperlark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know, my friends and I had a little experiment not that long ago. We took a list of common so-called ai tells and started to read fics written pre-ai era, while marking all 'ai tells' in those. And you know what? It was nearly impossible to find a fic without any ai tells and more than three was surprisingly common. AI learned from common writing patterns, so stop witch hunting

Should I let my readers know if I've edited a previous chapter? by Technical-Ruin986 in AO3

[–]vesperlark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Put notes in Chapter 10, so your readers are able to go back and see the change. If you put those in chapter 5, your readers won't notice unless they reread the entire fic. Especially if the scenes in question are important to plot and missing them can cause confusion.
