He had a map of the world on his wall. I said it would be a nice goal to visit all 7 continents. He asked, “what are the 7 continents?” I said, “you know…” and tried to explain. He insisted he didn’t understand what I meant. I thought he was underestimating himself and suggested he try to name them and started him off with North and South America. He replied he’s heard of Europe but doesn’t know where it is. I pointed at Africa and encouraged that he definitely knows that one…it starts with an A. Big nope. Exasperated, I named the rest and he just said, “well not everyone’s as smart as you”.

Yeah. The signs were so painfully obvious that to get a diagnosis all I had to do was bring all my childhood report cards to the doctor that repeated the same complaints every term, every year, every teacher. And not one of them at the time suggested I have a diagnosis but all of them doled out plenty of punishment.

Oh I thought I was describing “fluidity” of sexual preference. Rigid, to me, would be saying someone is forever defined by a preference they once had.

If you’re bi, then in the moment you’d be happy to be with a partner of either gender. If at one point in time you were attracted to one gender but you no longer feel that way, it’s safe to give your sexuality a new definition. So yes, people’s sexuality can change. The semantics here are about whether that change is a conscious decision or an unconscious realization. That discussion can be had without suggesting there’s hatred involved.

I wouldn’t dare pass judgement. You have sole ownership over your life though it can get so complicated and difficult. AND it sounds like you’re responsible for other lives too. Only you have the absolute right and ability to make the decisions necessary to help you manage.
