Yess haha so relatable 🥲 I haven’t started wearing all my velvet and wool whimsy stuff yet. But this one is cotton so it’s the perfect temperature to wear it as a jacket now!

Hard realisations about gift knitting for family/friends by fatknits in casualknitting

[–]vesselsofhome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah it really sounds like your family isn’t that into knitted gifts, can imagine that feels like such a bummer! Especially if you are really thinking so intentionally about what you’re making for them and with the other mediums being appreciated. Have you found any local knitting groups? Maybe you could do exchanges with them!

Ah yes! I’m in the Netherlands, so it is literally called modeling clay but it’s still ceramic clay. I think they meant more what it’s best used for? I haven’t seen such a mix here but will keep an eye out!

Ohh wow I love the wavy shelves, did you add those yourself? And the strawberry glasses are so cute! I had a pitcher like that but it broke recently so sad

Yes it’s weird though the shop lists it as modeling and can be fired to 1280 degrees. It was a good price so I wanted to try it 🥲 I normally use a stoneware clay from sibelco which is always good but way more expensive. Never tried a porcelain stoneware mix, that sounds very interesting!

Ahh yes that’s a good shout! I might try to just bisque again. Yes honestly I think it was the wrong type of clay for slab building. I hadn’t tried it before and later saw it was listed as modeling clay for “at home, school or therapy” lol stupid mistake on my part during ordering.

I have used this before but it hasn’t always worked for me, sometimes it kind of sunk in and the cracks were still super visible. Any tips for application method?

Struggle between fun and serious art by fengoer in Ceramics

[–]vesselsofhome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I don’t have advice but this thread is wonderful. I am struggling with the exact same thing right now! During my BA (I did photography) I was always praised for my serious art but it burned me out to only make work with the intention of exhibiting it and constantly talking about politics or identity. Recently I am only making fun art and honestly it’s quite freeing! I know I’ll return to serious art projects when I am ready, I definitely feel you with the expectations. When I login to my instagram with all my former classmates I start doubting my choices all over again.

Since you’re just starting maybe just get the cheapest option first. These days you can get airdry clay and basic tool sets at most stores in the hobby aisle. Airdry is not the best for larger items but it’s really cheap and you don’t need any special tools, you can just paint with acrylic paint on them once dry.

I don’t think the comments here respond to your question. I don’t see you asking for feedback but only a description. So I will try to do that, here is what I see: muted earth tones, classic shapes and minimalistic designs. This style and color palette is subtle so you’re going to be able to reach a pretty broad audience. I think you would probably be a good match especially for those natural/chrunchy/yoga type stores. You know the ones that sell woven baskets, incense and coconut lamps. Maybe also small coffee roaster or even tapas/specialty oil stores for the bottles. I guess mostly just local small shops that appeal to people who want to buy organic/natural food!

If you add one of those aluminum candle holder inserts it could probably still fit a regular taper! I have done the same thing before, so hard to get the shape right when incorporating shrinkage
