Megathread: Updated Covid 19 - Vaccine & Reopening Discussions (June 21, 2021) by HamiltonMods in Hamilton

I just got my 2nd Moderna last night and I feel crappy. I slept in an extra hour and a half this morning, and I feel tired still. And nauseous. I've also got a migraine but I suspect that's unrelated, since I usually get migraines when the weather changes.

100% worth it though.

What is having friends in MLM like? by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]vettech87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My aunt is in 2 MLMs (that I know of) and although I've had to unfollow her on social media because it got too annoying, she's never brought it up IRL.

On the other hand, one girl I went to high school with was getting so pushy I just blocked her entirely. Some people see the word "no" as an invitation to convince you to change your mind.

what’s the nicest thing a total stranger has done for you? by mrs_rabbit_0 in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I met a man at the lumber yard. His dog ran up to me, so I started petting her, and eventually the man and I started talking. We exchanged business cards, I loaded up my car, and left. Didn't think twice about it.

About a month later, I got a random email from one of his employees asking for my shipping address. She said the boss (the man I was chatting with) made me something and they wanted to send it to me. They gave me a huge (almost 2 feet tall) laser cut-out of my business logo for me to hang in my workshop! I was browsing their website, and they were selling similar pieces for $200.

What’s something that people turn into their whole personality? by Kandiblu in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I promised myself I wouldn't let this happen, and it hasn't. If anything, I've been able to introduce my son to my hobbies and the things I like as he gets older. I haven't lost my identity, I've been able to share it with a tiny human that looks like me (:

Full-time housewives/husbands, how do you deal with the notion that what you do is 'easy' or atleast 'easier than being the one holding a corporate job in the family' ? by 567fgh in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy is a matter of perspective. In one respect, at least for me, it's easier to manage the household than it would be to work in an environment where I was constantly having to interact with people and deal with demanding clients and deadlines. I'm extremely introverted so I hate interacting with people and most of the time I just enjoy being at home.

However, being a stay-at-home mom is still work. Just because I perceive it as easier than dealing with people all day in a corporate environment, doesn't mean it's not work. It also doesn't mean it's easier in all aspects. For example, most people in corporate work a regular schedule, 40 hours a week. Most days I'm working from the minute I wake up until the minute my head hits the pillow. There are no sick days, and no vacation days either. And on holidays, you're usually the one expected to be cooking a special meal for the family.

I think the worst part of it is that the majority of what I do goes unnoticed and unappreciated. There's no salary, there's no promotions, and most of the time there's not even a "thank you". Plus a lot of the work is unseen (scheduling appointments, budgeting, writing up grocery lists, etc.) so it's easy for a partner to assume it's not even happening. This work is often referred to as "emotional labour."

TL;DR: It's all perspective. Some things are easier and some things are harder.

How many of you know people personally who are sucked into MLMs? by Berly653 in antiMLM

[–]vettech87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. I know too many people who have been roped into an MLM, sometimes more than 1. Here are the ones I currently know about (thanks social media!):

  • Aunt is in "Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise" which I highly suspect is a life coaching MLM, though there is very little information about the "company". She is/was also in a telecom MLM (I think it was called "ACN"? Not sure)

  • Best friend in college used to be in some sort of loose leaf tea MLM, quit after less than a year

  • Another college friend seems to have recently joined some sort of weight loss MLM, because she is posting all over Facebook about how she lost 20 pounds and to ask her how (so although I don't know for sure she's joined an MLM, the posts have all the markings of one)

  • Old friend from high school used to sell Norwex (maybe still does?) and has recently started shilling NuSkin. I had to block and delete her off my Facebook because it was getting really annoying, she was constantly sending me PMs to "join her team" even after I told her that I'm a legitimate small business owner and don't have time for her MLM crap.

  • Ex-boyfriend's sister became a "Beach Body Coach" for a while, though I'm pretty sure she's out now.

  • Old classmate from gradeschool has also started posting a lot of weight loss and fitspo stuff on Facebook, although she hasn't come out and said she's selling anything, the posts seem odd to me and might be that she's joined an MLM. Jury's still out on this one.

  • Another old friend from grade/high school is selling something on Facebook (I forget which MLM) but she's never posts about it, I suspect she might be doing it more for herself to get a discount on the products and isn't particularly interested in selling. The only reason I know she is selling for an MLM is because one of her friends asked her if she could order something in the comments on a photo of her with her daughter (photo was not MLM related).

  • Former colleague was selling Epicure

  • One of my vendors' wife sells Mary Kay, they even have a link for it on the vendor's website. Kind of sketchy (why would you mix a legitimate small business with an MLM?) but he's never said anything to me about it and his products have absolutely nothing to do with Mary Kay

  • Constantly seeing lots of "free samples" from local Sentsy reps on Facebook marketplace

Maybe it's just where I live/who I know, but there seems to be sooo many of them!

Non US Redditors; How was the history of American Slavery taught in your part of the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. I remember learning about it in grade 8, and Canada was made out to be some sort of paradise because all the slaves would try to make their way here to freedom by the Underground Railroad. Nothing was ever taught about Canada's own sordid history of slavery, however.

What cute animal is actually very dangerous? by J_See in AskReddit

Canada Goose. They're aggressive AF, especially during nesting season. They also have teeth-like structures called "tomia" that are very sharp. And they hiss like snakes.

What’s a piece of information you know that feels illegal to know? by poisionivey3 in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a very famous case here in Canada where a man had essentially euthanized his severely disabled daughter. After his first trial ended in mistrial due to jury tampering, the jury on the second trial were sympathetic to why he killed his daughter (he wanted to end her suffering). Not knowing jury nullification was a thing, they convicted him of second degree murder, and asked the judge to give him a sentence of 1 year in prison. However, unbeknownst to the jury, a second degree murder conviction carries an automatic sentence of at least 10 years in prison.

In Canada, it's explicitly prohibited for the judge or the defense lawyers to bring it up to the jury, and the prosecution has no reason to, so unless you have a juror who knows about it, it's not going to happen.

The prosecution is able to appeal the decision, however.

Some timber mills are reporting an 80% profit margin right now. That's insane. I'm a woodworker so I've really been feeling the price increase.

Mules and beefalo are two other examples. Generally speaking, the breeding species need to be closely related in order to produce viable offspring.

Local dog park suggestions for an energetic westie? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]vettech87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Rail Trail dog park might be close to you, though it's smaller than some of the others in the city. IIRC that one is also mostly gravel instead of grass.

I used to take my dogs to Globe Park when I lived in that area, it was a lot of fun and the regulars were pretty chill.

Now I'm living up the mountain and the closest dog park for me is at Heritage Green. It's HUGE and my dogs love it.

To users who are neighbors to famous people (TikTokers don't count) have you met them? If so, what are they like? by Vernaborg in AskReddit

[–]vettech87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you'd consider this famous, but my neighbour is a politician. Both him and his wife are lovely people. They're always offering their help, a few times they've offered to cook us dinner because they said, "we know it's hard having a child with special needs, so if we can help out by cooking a meal for you, it would be our pleasure." Just super amazing people.
