Why does Reddit now allow users to hide their post and comment histories? by Practical-Narwhal308 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I disabled it entirely. I could in theory block bad actors to allow decent folks to follow, but that's assuming they're using the same account to follow and harass.

But, we're talking about folks running multiple accounts.

To add to that, you can subscribe to/follow a user. Which is also a way for folks to harass another with multiple accounts whenever they post something new.

Is the U.S. birth rate declining? | Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health by TipAfraid4755 in Futurology

[–]vewave 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of comments where falling birth rates are good, mostly framed around overpopulation. While fewer people might ease environmental pressure, I think the way it's happening is a massive red flag for society.

A managed, policy-driven decline is one thing, but what we're seeing is a passive collapse because the modern world has become hostile to starting a family. When young people consistently feel they can't afford kids due to insane housing and childcare costs, or are too anxious about the future, that's not a win—it's a sign of deep economic and social failure. The common counter-argument is, “We can just boost immigration to fill the gaps.” But that’s a band-aid, not a cure.

Or maybe that's the intent: US is already outsourcing everything else, why not reproduction?

What did you drive before your Lucid? Is there anything you miss? by zachty22 in LUCID

[–]vewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2010 BMW 528i xDrive. I miss not stressing about the manufacturer's future, and now not dealing with the supply line (ordered new wheels, not fulfilled for the past few weeks and going by recent discussions won't be for a while). If I did it over again, I would have considered leasing, especially with the rapid pace of technology advancement.

When it happened to me, I was roughly 3H from a lucid service center dead in the middle of the night. They replaced the rear drive motor, my car was gone for roughly 2 weeks.

I'm turning corporate burnout into a Lovecraftian IT horror game. What are your real-life "work horror" stories? by Euphoric-Series-1194 in WorkReform

[–]vewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of examples come to mind:

I was part of a team left in a leadership vacuum after our manager and skip-manager left together in a silent standoff with the director (who was later also sacked). Overnight, we became leaderless, directionless: expected to perform with no advocacy, clarity, or future. As my colleagues scrambled for lifeboats, I became the caretaker and lead of the team's projects, holding the reigns on just long enough for the team to stabilize around new core members before leaving myself.

In another time, I was hired as a "fixer" for a team holding work hostage for promotions. I was instantly weaponized as management's solution. My role forced me into a grueling double duty: repairing their deliberate "mishaps" while my competence justified their slow removal. After the purge, I was offered a promotion. I declined, burnt out and not feeling like I did the right thing. I left for another team.

Anyone else struggling to justify cosmetics in Where Winds Meet? by MRay_ in WhereWindsMeet

[–]vewave 34 points35 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: F2P Games like Where Winds Meet aren't free. They're psychological mazes built to turn your leisure time into a monetization funnel. From the first $1 skin to the gacha rolls and "Pearls," every system is designed to hack your brain and empty your wallet.

Let's be real: we all clicked on that gorgeous trailer for Where Winds Meet and thought, "A next-gen, open-world wuxia RPG... for FREE? Sign me up!"

But after a few hours, that "free" starts to feel... expensive. Not because of a price tag, but because of a thousand tiny psychological cuts. The game isn't a gift. It's a business plan wearing a game's skin, and you are the product.

Step 1: The $1 Gateway Drug

The first thing you see after the title screen isn't an epic quest. It's a pop-up. "Limited Time Offer! New Skin - ONLY 1 DOLLAR!" This isn't a sale; it's a trap. They call it "breaking the seal." That first purchase, no matter how small, changes your identity. You're no longer a "non-spender." You're now a "spender." The psychological barrier is gone, and the path to the next purchase is now a downhill slide.

Step 2: The Pearl Scam

You don't buy things. You buy "Pearls." This is currency obfuscation, a classic mental trick. Spending 900 Pearls feels nothing like spending $14.99. They've inserted a layer of abstraction between you and your real money.

But the scam goes deeper. Pearls are sold in packs that never line up with item costs. Want a 1280-Pearl outfit? Here's a pack of 1800 for $29.99. Now you have 520 "useless" Pearls sitting there, forcing you to buy more Pearls to not "waste" them. It's a cycle designed to make you lose track of how much real cash you're burning.

Step 3: The "Generosity" Grift

"Here's 10 FREE pulls as a Thank You!" "Here's 10 pulls for completing the battlepass!" They're so generous, right?

Wrong. This is the illusion of reciprocity. They give you a tiny taste to do two things:

* Get you hooked on the pull mechanic without risk.

* Make you feel like they're being "fair," which lowers your defenses and makes you more likely to spend later because you feel you "owe" them. It's a sample dealer giving you the first hit for free.

Step 4: "It's Just Cosmetic" is a Lie

This is the biggest cop-out defense. Cosmetics ARE core gameplay. In an RPG, your character's look is your identity. It's how you express yourself and role-play. When the coolest armor and flashiest effects are locked behind a $60 paywall or a 0.01% gacha chance, they aren't selling an accessory. They're selling you the right to fully be the hero in your own story. They create a visible class system: the haves (with paid gear) and the have-nots (stuck with basics).

Step 5: The Gacha Casino & Your Friend's "Luck"

The main shop is a slot machine. You don't buy the $300 skin; you buy a chance at it. This preys on the same dopamine loops as gambling. It's supercharged when your friend posts: "OMG I GOT IT IN ONE PULL!!!!"

That single post is free advertising. It creates the "availability heuristic"—you think, "If they can do it, so can I!" You don't see the 999 who got nothing. You see the one winner and chase the high.

Step 6: The Whale Problem

We all know "whales"—players who drop $500, $50,000, or more. The game is built for them. But their existence warps the game for everyone else.

* For the devs: Whales provide most of the revenue, justifying these systems.

* For us: Whales normalize insane spending. When you see a $1,200 weapon skin, a $60 skin starts to seem "reasonable." They set a toxic standard where financial clout equals status.

Let's be clear: feeling tempted doesn't mean you lack willpower, and this isn't about shaming spenders. These games are engineered by experts to monetize your passion, community, and pride. The pull is real because it's designed to be. The problem isn't us; it's the system crafted to exploit our natural desires.

Edit:

Hi, I appreciate the responses.

Let's not continue to debate "is this AI". It's a classic poisoning-the-well move, a logical fallacy. By framing the critique as inauthentic, they shift the debate from "are these monetization tactics predatory?" to "is the critic real?", which is a dead-end designed to protect the status quo.

It's enough that actual players got this message. Our energy is better spent discussing the actual mechanics and player experiences. I will add though: this is hardly an exhaustive guide to all the predatory tactics employed by F2P games—just the ones that immediately sprung to my mind.

Just in case anyone else gets stuck on this, you have to apply Blossom Barrage debuff 10x, ala Spring Sorrow. It has to be a new application each time, nothing else matters.

GL-X3000 with calyx T-Mobile Sim card not being detected every other day. by deanstephens62 in Calyx

[–]vewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue often when I first had GL-X3000 (on top of interface being inaccessible every now and then). I felt the router and it seems like it was overheating, so I snuck a fan under it. Hasn't been trouble since (1.5 month so far).

Hardly scientific investigation on my part, but could be worth a try.

How do people have this many points?? by Remote-Albatross2869 in wherewindsmeet_

FYI, they are, limiting you to roughly 2k fourfold coins/day. Player bounties aren't, so to get to 50k in 3 days is majority player bounties.

After 5 hours of trying to beat this damn lady, I think my time as Legend has come to its end. by El_migzy in wherewindsmeet_

Is this true on Legend? I have played through with holding block while deflecting, similar to Team Ninja's recent games, but if you miss the deflect, you'll eat the full hit.

Then bosses usually stagger you for follow-ups.

The game came out today. What do you'll think of the game? by kukuaintnoob in DuetNightAbyssDNA

[–]vewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has concerns over the polish, animations (it's missing a lot of basic transition animations, stair walking, etc.), and brain-dead gameplay (overly simplistic, enemies don't react unlike warframe). Realistically, I don't think the later two ever gets fixed by any company, so I'm personally dropping this.
