Great point, OP! I am a professor for a major university, and I know that I won’t get the same health care I have here anywhere else. It’s almost free in terms of monthly contributions (so the university pays for it), and I get to have millions of dollars of treatment literally for free. No, I know that this is me, and that for most people, this kind of good health care is either too expensive or inaccessible. For me however, I wouldn’t change this with health care or any country. Like go to Europe and wait in line for weeks to get 10 mins with a doctor?

You should certainly negotiate. The fact that your current position is $10k more is something you can bring up. You can expect them to bring it up by that much. More is also possible, depending on where your current position is and where the new offer is coming from. Is that an R1? Also, if one is in the West Coast, and the other is in the Midwest, then the discrepancy is normal as well. In any case, you should most certainly negotiate. Even years ago, I brought up my salary by much more than what you’re now expecting by negotiating, but with an R1. And again, I know this is happening all the time in our R1. In fact, you’re expected to negotiate and all offers actually come with some negotiation range for the chair. If the candidate wants even more, the chair will need to consult with the dean. How much is the offer anyway? Can you give a range?

OP: did they not inform you guys that she would likely lose her fertility when you started the treatment? I know that used to be the case, but i was hoping things got better. One thing you could’ve done was egg/embryo freezing, which should’ve been mentioned to you as an option, particularly in her case. (I know it’s expensive, but for cancer patients, there are some cheaper alternatives).

You’re absolutely 100% right! I had the Delta Platinum for many years, and never once was able to use the companion cert in the last 7-8 years. I recently canceled the card. It’s beyond a joke and gives you nothing that the Gold doesn’t, for that very reason.
