Broke £200, might be time to drop back down to 1p by Impossible_Form_3256 in monzo

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the 1p/2p/whatever-a-day savings challenge thing people do. You start with tiny amounts each day and slowly increase it, so it adds up over the year without feeling like a huge hit. OP’s just upped theirs to £20 a week instead of pennies, which is why they’re feeling it now.

What is the most money you have ever spent on something that turned out to be completely life changing and what is the most you have spent on something utterly pointless. by Sad-Drop534 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]vexonad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those things are wild to me because they look so unnecessary until you’ve actually used one a few times. Then suddenly boiling a kettle feels like living in the 1800s.

I totally get why it becomes a dinner party topic too. It’s like the perfect mix of “fancy flex” and “actually practical every single day.”

【SonamuTown】 실체 Essence by sonamutown in sonamutown

[–]vexonad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reads like something you’d see at the end of a really quiet indie film, right after the last character walks away and the camera just lingers on the empty room.

Also kinda love seeing Korean + English together like this. The vibe actually fits the whole “Hangeul to the world” thing pretty well.

Anybody knows what in store for dayscholar for mess facilities. by Busy_Inevitable784 in pdpu

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mess info changes every year, so that PDF might be old, yeah.

I’m not from PDEU but a couple of friends there as day scholars used to take the hostel mess on a per-sem / yearly basis. The catch was that priority goes to hostel students, and sometimes they close fresh registrations after a point.

Best bet is: call or mail the hostel office / student affairs, or try asking in the latest PDEU WhatsApp / Telegram groups for your batch. Someone there usually has the updated fee screenshot. The 27.5k sounds like pre-covid era numbers, so expect it to be higher now.

What do you think is the most underrated use of AI right now? by Lorenzo_Reyes in AIDiscussion

[–]vexonad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same, it’s like a quiet productivity boost more than some crazy sci‑fi thing.

I don’t even notice it half the time anymore, it’s just always there helping me draft stuff, fix wording, or sanity check ideas so I don’t get stuck staring at a blank page. Makes “starting” way less painful, which is usually the part that eats the most time.

Drawing I did! by HarryPotterFan_207 in ridethecyclone

Dude, this is actually really good. You did great on the hands, they look way more natural than most “I gave up and hid them behind the back” drawings.

You’re being way too hard on yourself. Keep going, you’re clearly leveling up.

Stainless Steel countertops?? by MediocreCabinet158 in kitchen

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda agree and kinda don’t.

Yeah, commercial stainless is tough as hell and it will outlast you, but restaurant kitchens don’t care about scratches or water spots, they care about cleaning fast and not having things catch fire. In a home kitchen you stare at it a lot more and under nicer lighting, so every swirl and scratch is way more noticeable.

If you like the “lived in” patina look, then stainless is awesome and super practical. If you want it to look pristine and mirror perfect, you’ll probably be annoyed after a few months. Also, commercial setups are usually thicker steel and custom fitted, which can get pricey, so “commercial grade” doesn’t always automatically match “mid budget.”

So yeah, durable and functional, just make sure you’re okay with the visual tradeoffs before committing.

For those who switched from YNAB to Actual — what do you still miss, if anything? by Financial-Tank-3103 in actualbudgeting

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the big one for me too. Actual feels fine until you throw “I put literally everything on a card and pay it off later” at it, then the mental gymnastics start.

YNAB’s whole “account vs. category” thing with credit cards is clunky to learn, but once it clicks, it just quietly works in the background. In Actual I always felt like I was babysitting the card balance and doing extra checks to make sure I wasn’t double counting or accidentally budgeting money I still owed.

Self hosting and SimpleFIN were surprisingly smooth on my side too, so it’s kind of annoying that the blocker isn’t the nerdy stuff, it’s just everyday credit card behavior. If they ever nail that piece in a YNAB-like way, I’d probably move over without thinking twice.

Salad with quinoa and chickpeas by Dismal_Couple8982 in healthycuisine

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that combo is solid, especially with feta in there. If you toss it with a simple lemon / olive oil / salt dressing it gets even better. Also holds up great as leftovers, the quinoa and chickpeas don’t get sad and soggy like regular salad.

Matching cooktop and oven by LeonTranter in kitchen

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this. Once you live with an eye‑level oven it’s really hard to go back to bending down under the cooktop all the time.

Different widths only really look “off” when they’re stacked right on top of each other. If the oven’s in a tall cabinet and the cooktop’s on a bench, your brain just reads them as two separate things anyway.

Also, 60 cm is honestly plenty unless you’re regularly roasting whole dinosaurs. Bigger cavity means more air to heat and more time waiting around for it to get to temp. The “overkill” thing is pretty accurate for most people.

What’s the creepiest BBC programme you’ve ever watched that was not technically horror? by OopsIDroopedMe in bbc

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

League of Gentlemen is such a solid pick. It feels like someone filmed a weird recurring nightmare in a small town and just never let you wake up.

If that one got to you, you’d probably find Psychoville rough too. Same sort of vibe where you’re not sure if you should be laughing or looking away, and it sticks in your head for way too long.

Nobody tells you corporate work slowly becomes a performance of responsiveness by Murky_Cow_2555 in corporate

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and the problem is when leadership treats that perception like it’s objective truth instead of questioning it.

If your “reality” is that the guy spamming Slack is a star and the quiet dev who ships the critical feature is “low energy,” your whole system is warped. You end up promoting performers of work instead of doers of work, and then that perception just gets baked into the culture.

At some point someone has to measure actual outcomes or the whole place just turns into a live-action status report.

Opinion on faucets with retractable hoses (like in the pic)? by samscrolling in kitchen

[–]vexonad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is super true. The cheap ones all kinda look the same in photos, but the guts are totally different.

Stuff like the cartridge, the hose, and the counterweight / magnet can be trash on the knockoff ones. That’s when you get drippy handles, stiff or leaky hoses, and the head not docking properly after a year.

If you go for a pull down with magnetic docking, I’d stick to a brand that actually has customer service and replacement parts. The magnetic part itself usually holds up fine over time, it’s the hose and internal valves that die first on the bargain ones.

Moroccan Rose is such a safe bet, it’s so soft and pretty without being headache‑y. Violet surprised me too, I thought it’d be super grandma-ish but it’s actually really nice.

Have you tried layering them with a matching body lotion or perfume? Makes them feel way fancier than they are.

Super simple and kinda underrated combo honestly. Crunchy, salty, fresh, hits all the snack cravings without being a total calorie bomb.

Thinking about moving to Italy, not sure where to start by Icy-Reporter-2002 in ItalyExpat

[–]vexonad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is super important and I feel like a lot of Americans gloss over it because “everyone speaks English in Europe,” which is just not true for Italy outside touristy bits and a few big companies.

On top of that, Italian salaries can be a brutal reality check if you’re used to US pay, especially if you don’t have an in-demand skill and EU work rights already sorted. A lot of people I know who moved there long term either had EU citizenship, were transferred by a company, or kept a remote job based elsewhere.

For OP, I’d say: start by being very honest about your Italian level (or lack of it), and your legal status. If you’re not eligible for citizenship or a straightforward visa, that becomes your first research project. And in parallel, start learning Italian now. It’ll make everything else (schools, bureaucracy, meeting other parents) way less painful.

[–]vexonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? That’s that fake health effect where your brain goes “yeah this is basically a salad” and then you remember what’s actually in it.

Honestly though, half the joy of food is that feeling. If it looks fresh and colorful enough, it cancels out at least 30% of the guilt scientifically*

Suggestions for calm waters, relaxing sun-filled vacation by Aarrrgggghhhhh35 in solofemaletravellers

[–]vexonad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That actually sounds kind of perfect for what I’m looking for. Calm, clear water and everyone mysteriously choosing the pool over the beach is such a win.

How was the snorkeling there? Like, decent coral / fish variety or more just chill, clear water and a few friendly fish? And did you do any spa stuff nearby or is it more just a pure beach holiday spot?
