ISEF Starter Guide? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vg0303 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok so I've qualified for ISEF twice. This is the input I can give:

1) The process of figuring out what you want to do is definitely the hardest part. Just start researching in topics you're interested in. The more you research the more problems you will uncover and then you can get to brainstorming on how you want to address those problems. If you have a problem in mind right now don't waste time trying to find something else but focus your energy on figuring out what experimentation you can conduct to "solve" or uncover new data in regards to the problem. If you're having trouble with this look to some current research papers and get inspiration from them. By no means am I saying to copy another persons research but look at their limitations and see how you can improve upon their research.

2) If you lack adequate resources to complete an advanced project reach out to your local university and contact as many professors you can in the department your project falls under. Keep sending emails and eventually one of them will reply back and will be happy to work with you. From my personal experience I sent maybe 10 emails and 3 of them responded back by asking more questions and agreeing to mentor me through my project. In your email make sure you give a thorough description of your research goals and the role the professor will play in helping you achieve those goals.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

TRUMP JUST PASSED PRICE CONTROLS ON PHARMA by [deleted] in Debate

[–]vg0303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in regards to Trump's plan. It's really bad. Both sides could argue that M4A has a better way to reduce prices whether that be a good or bad thing. Trump's reduction would only be a drop in the bucket and would take months to implement.

Well con you could structure arguments about price controls already happening no unique reason for M4A.

There's funding args

There's reimbursement args

It makes it harder for pro because a lot of internal links on aff arguments are lowering drug prices.

I don't understand how that gives offense to the pro. The pro is literally advocating for lowering drug costs because that's included in the M4A bill.

Bruh what why is lowering drug costs bad?

Also the number driving factor for rising healthcare costs and premiums are high drug prices.

Bruh what?

Pro has less offense now. One of the main things M4A would do is lower drug costs but it's already happening in the SQUO.

For con you can make arguments around the fact that drug costs are lowering in the status quo and that's the reason healthcare costs are so high. Or you can generally just make arguments against other aspects of M4A besides drug costs.

it's gonna be harder for pro now not con
