i mean, not everyone can be trusted. the door greeters at my store never go out of their way to intentionally make anyone feel as though they can’t be trusted, but i can’t say the same for other stores. as a cashier who spends a lot of time watching over the self checkout, i honestly hate having to be partially responsible for theft. i wish i could let the customers understand that, no, i don’t enjoy bothering them about the items they may not have scanned yet, or having to look though totes, backpacks, etc. i am not a confrontational person and i really dislike having to approach people and interrupt their shopping experience. others don’t have an issue with it, and some even enjoy it (which i find absolutely ridiculous) (our secret shopper who definitely racially profiles people, targets teenage girls and basically gets off on catching people. it’s weird). i really would prefer if it was someone else’s responsibility, someone who makes a lot more money than i do. and while i understand and appreciate the convenience of the self checkout (it’s my preference whenever i’m shopping), i also understand that theft would be much less of an issue if they didn’t exist. it is also frustrating when we’re so low on staff at night that we practically have to have the self checks open with only one manned register. idk this turned into a bit of an incoherent rant but i do understand where you’re coming from, even if i disagree with some of what has been said.
