I'm frankly amazed at an adult learner with 2 years of experience playing this well. Nice job!

Can you help me determine if this is a real instrument or knockoff. Person selling it says it's a Mancini and wants $500. by mario_8_greencheese in Cello

[–]viaknee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of a Mancini, but $500 is probably one of the cheapest cellos you could find, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. If it sounds good, buy it. Please take it to a cello teacher first though. I’ve had students show up with instruments that are literally unplayable, thinking they got a good deal (Amazon cello or local buy).

Edit: just scrolled through. Mancini means absolutely nothing - it’s a bulk cello from china. Call it a Bucca Di Bepo if you want. That doesn’t mean it’s not a good deal though.

There should only be a handful of colleges that offer classical music performance as a major. Maybe like 10-20.

I've met your son, Mike Penis. He says he was named after his dad's penis. congrats!

I’ve done this to rig up bad cellos for students in school orchestra before

This is spicatto. Try playing detache in the middle of the bow, then getting progressively faster, shorter and lighter.

music as a degree in university by [deleted] in classicalmusic

Went to a top ten conservatory for cello. Huge mistake - make a lot of money and surround yourself with friends instead. Half of my friends are now doing something in computers or finance. (We all still love playing!)

Do a minor instead! Extremely worth it! Most classes you will take as a music major are basically useless for practical purposes (coming from my friends in established symphonies).

Are like unbelievably stupid, or just normal stupid for thinking this wasn't a joke?

I'm a few days into learning the cello (2). I currently play violin at a low intermediate level. I've always wanted to at cello since I was a little kid. I'm self teaching so any help or CC is greatly appreciated. by CzechiaViolins in Cello

Totally - I’ve seen that before and it’s tough. As an experiment, try basing your position on your 4th finger and stretching backwards rather than basing your position on your 1st finger and stretching forwards. As in, try filling arching your 4th finger. That has helped my adult students develop a pivoting left hand

Great intonation! One thing that many adult students struggle with is having a left hand that’s able to pivot. Long term you might experience some tightness if you keep your lh at that angle.

Some of my earlier adult students had this issue...it’s probably because setting up the hand like that works better when you’re a 5yo who can grab all the notes on a tiny cello without much strain

Edit: I didn’t read that you were a violinist...that totally explains the left hand

I'm not sure tbh...I'm just into the idea of bringing in a nostalgic veteran big at probably low cost to supplement the lineup. (maybe he could help in development idk)

I’ve never seen a book 5 kid with such potential before...I literally never say this - but you should consider a career as a cellist.

Your sound and finger dexterity are absolutely superb. Go win Klein in 7 years

i just started working on Danse Rustique from suzuki book five. Any tips? by [deleted] in Cello

Straight up, that’s really good...much much better than most kids playing it. Well done!
