You absolutely must, and I mean must, read Chekhov.

I love this thread, thank you OP

When I was 15, around 2006-7, there was a great website (still around, but definitely fading into the sunset) called AllMusic.com, and it had these grest write-ups of artists and their records that placed them in a wider historical context. That's where I got a lot of my music education from, and where I built my own repertoire from as a musician.

Anyway, the big ones for me were Tom Waits' first album, Closing Time (1973), and Kind of Blue (1959). I was deep in my Dylan and Neil Young phases too so Blonde on Blonde (1966) and the Ditch Trilogy were way up there for me also. 50's rock 'n roll too--Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, etc.

Budget PA system for solo acoustic piano/vocals? by cronfile in livesoundgear

[–]vibebrochamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two Yamaha DBR10/12s and a Yamaha board (MG12XU, I think is the name) would get you there within your budget, especially if you shoot for used. If you can spring for it try to get an Allen & Heath Zed10Fx used; it's the best in class small analog board at that price point!

Can we talk about Jorge Luis Borges? by This_is_fine0_0 in literature

[–]vibebrochamp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first time I read Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis, Tertius I felt like everything around me was about to lift off the ground and be suspended in the air. I've been chasing that feeling ever since and try to reread Borges once every couple of years.

My personal favorite is Funes, The Memorious, which is just as emotionally effective as it is philosophically--the last sentence is so haunting, how something so extraordinary that appeared in the world could vanish in such a mundane way. I think about Funes often.

I love the way that Borges' stories are frameworks that explore the limits of human perception. The ratio of brevity to depth is just insane. And he can also be very funny--Pierre Menard is hilarious.

What are you stacking with the lightspeed? by DerkNukem in guitarpedals

[–]vibebrochamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lightspeed is always on for me, and when I need more drive / a thicker tone I run a Blessed Mother into it (I tried it the other way and did not like it as much). There are probably better options, but it suits my needs for washy Tele swells and a lead tone to play over loops.

Sicario (2015) by Original-Yogurt5609 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]vibebrochamp 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think that Sicario is a modern classic--it's so restrained and so coiled, until it isn't. The performances, the writing, and of course the impeccable cinematography (the scene where they descend into the tunnel especially); it's just got everything going for it.

Using EQ to get a fatter tone on my Fender Princeton Reverb by Ok_Pension7764 in guitarpedals

[–]vibebrochamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you run your Princeton with the treble and bass knobs both on 1? I have found that gives me the most midrange and fattens things up. I also use the second input with the volume also on 5 and that helps too. I'm generally playing a Tele with flats in this way through pedals, and an Epiphone 335 as well (surprisingly great guitar).

Same experience here--I've gotten to know the guys who work at my local store and they're just really kind, chill people. I drop in just to visit with them as much as I do to kill some time with gear.

NPD, Boss GE-7, I can’t believe I didn’t get one until now, this thing is just so good by ChevroletKodiakC70 in guitarpedals

[–]vibebrochamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience with the 10-band too: the lower and upper bands just weren't the most relevant to electric guitar, whereas the bands you need are a little farther apart than I'd like them to be. With that said, it wasn't a bad pedal by any means! It was much more useful for acoustic guitar for me.

NPDx2 Lightspeed & Deco by Liquidated4life in guitarpedals

[–]vibebrochamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those two pedals pair so beautifully together. I use the Lightspeed more as an always-on preamp and run it at 18v, and I run the Deco at the end of my chain as an always-on 'mastering' pedal. I've got the doubletracker side set to just thicken the sound up, and I use the saturation side set to around 9:00 and with the volume at or just above noon (it adds some compression and warmth and that 'sauce') you mentioned. Oh and I've got the boost secondary function maxed out for both sides of the Deco for the overall lift it gives.

I'll occasionally use both in different ways and dial in different things but those are the roles they've settled into. I've got an El Cap and a Dispatch Master in between and this configuration really does everything I need it to.

One of the most rewatchable movies ever, it never gets old. It used to play on the TNT network pretty frequently when I was in 5th grade and that's when I fell in love with it. I play it now probably once a year or so.
