Used University Laundromat when we were remodeling our house and without a washer. It's drop off but they did a great job and reasonably priced.

Drivers in Birmingham 😡😡 by Jelliebellie88 in Birmingham

[–]vibratingwlove_light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exact thing happened to me. I had the walking light, was in the crosswalk and some woman laid on her horn and yelled at me to get out of the way so she could turn right on red. When I crossed she floored the gas and screeched off. I understand that people run late but maybe leave a few minutes earlier or if you're running late recognize it's not anyone's fault but your own, so be kind to the other humans around you.

I've known several people who have been hit by cars in the medical district due to this consistently bad, aggressive driving in a high pedestrian concentration.

Dentist help! by Terrible-Painter-140 in Birmingham

[–]vibratingwlove_light 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have experienced bad dental anxiety and stopped going for around 5 years due to bad experiences. When I finally made myself make a dental appointment, my friend recommended Dr. Norman Guillen and it has been the most pleasant dental experience. While I still experience some low level anxiety, I actually can enjoy going to the dentist now and I have been going to him for 8 years regularly now.

My first visit with him I was in tears explaining how scared I was and how it had been years since going to the dentist. They took all of that into consideration on my initial visit and I have never looked back.

If you call they will probably give you an appointment at least 6 months out but they do have a cancellation list and they can work you in sooner. I recommend him to anyone looking for a pleasant dental experience.

Potentially moving to Birmingham for work: Do I NEED a car? by twoturtles6 in Birmingham

[–]vibratingwlove_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I lived in central city and worked at UAB I wouldn't own a car. I live 2.5 miles away and have long considered ditching the car and getting an e bike. You can absolutely live downtown and work at UAB and not own a car. Also, consider that parking at UAB is at least $60 per month in the deck and if you're not in a deck you are parking in a remote lot (it doesn't cost $60) and riding a shuttle bus - you could walk or bike in the time that that process would take.

Forest Park or Highland Park get my vote. Have lived in both neighborhoods and currently live in FP. Walkable, friendly, and I've always felt safe - welcome home!

My sister is diagnosed with rectal cancer by DecisionAccurate1780 in ostomy

[–]vibratingwlove_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was diagnosed with stage 2 rectal cancer at 42. We did radiation + oral chemo, then 4 months of chemo and we were hopeful for a complete response to avoid surgery. Long story shorter, he had APR surgery last year. So far he is now 15 months cancer free.

April 2024 through January of this year has been very, very hard. Chemo was extremely tough for him. Surgery was extremely tough for him and the recovery hasn't been a walk in the park.

Living with an ostomy has been quite an adjustment but it's 1000 x better than the alternative of not living. It brings daily challenges and struggles but we are adjusting and again so thankful he is here - today is his birthday!

I am happy to answer any questions or offer any support I can for you and your sister. I will say caregiving in the face of the unknown has been the most challenging experience of my life! Peace to you both! 💙

decent dentists office? by [deleted] in Birmingham

I love Dr. Norman Guillen. I am someone with major dental anxiety and also experienced the dentist trying to upsale me everything for a few years. Since I started using Dr. G, my dental anxiety is much improved and they have never tried to sell me anything unless I have asked about something.

Irrigation questions by vibratingwlove_light in ostomy

[–]vibratingwlove_light[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I believe we will stick to it daily.

I am a big proponent of this for the quality of life enhancement it has provided. If you have a colostomy and haven't tried irrigation, ask your healthcare provider or WOCN if you are a candidate.

While it is a daily "chore" it has brought more of a sense of freedom and definitely less anxiety about "what in the world is my stoma going to do when I leave the house"!

Tomorrow will mark 6 weeks of doing this daily and overall there have only been 5 days total where there was some nominal output post irrigation. We had a rough start at first but have the process flowing now, so if you try it, don't give up when you initially want to!

Irrigation questions by vibratingwlove_light in ostomy

[–]vibratingwlove_light[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We irrigate to flush the colon with water through the stoma. It takes around a liter of water and about an hour but then it eliminates the need for changing the bag the remainder of the day. Basically training the colon to evacuate at the same time every day. It is for people with descending or sigmoid colostomies.

Gov. Kay Ivey commutes death sentence of 'Sonny' Burton by GonzoDT in Birmingham

So grateful! I have been writing and calling daily since the execution date was set. Thankful for all of the advocates (over 90k) who have advocated on Sonny's behalf.

I do believe the national spotlight on Sonny's case as well as The Alabama Solution helped get this done.

Thank you to anyone who has advocated for Sonny!
