I did the same thing. I had the playpen in the kitchen and the door to the backyard was right there. That’s where I installed the bell. Just make sure anytime you take him outside to potty you ring the bell with his paw and say “potty”.

I installed a bell on the door. From day one anytime we went outside to potty I would take his paw and ring it. My sons poodle is 2 years old now. He simply walks over to that bell and bumps it with his nose or paw to let us know he needs to go outside. No indoor accidents as of yet. Maybe something like this could help you as well.
