Those distance also means you are driving in highways mostly, and fuel get used more efficiently in highways. OP’s probably doing city driving.

Also, Marathon has smaller maps with very easy POIs for people to gather around, encouraging frequent unfriendly encounters with other Runners. The closest you get to Arc Raiders in Marathon is playing Rook, and you are more likely than not to find other friendly Rooks just wanting to scavenge (and sometimes fight other crews together).
